What is the most hilarious question someone has asked you about drums/drumming?

"Can you be a little lighter on those hat thingeys?"

I have recently been thru a spate of gigs in smaller, noise limitered venues, playing a small kit without mics. I have frequently been asked if I can "turn the drums down a bit?"

Lesson 101 on acoustic instruments coming up....

i get that! once a guy at the bar asked our lead singer if she would "turn the drummer down", as if i had a volume dial on me or something.

Lesson 102. Don't hit so hard.

BTW, it does sound like hell when the drums are too loud.

Nothing wrong with playing at lower dynamic levels... In a sense, you can "turn down" somewhat, though it depends on what you're playing. I have a really hard time "fading" drum parts down when I'm doing like fast one-hand 16ths... It's very difficult to lower volume of the strikes without altering the space between them at high speeds.

Yeah, only these limiters trip the power when you stamp a foot on the stage, they're set that low. Short of playing Rock with brushes, I couldn't play much softer. On a tangent; if you want quiet music cos of limiters, why book a rock band?!?!?!

drums generally dont sound good below a certain volume though so i get what AJ is saying!
plus you always get this especially when the instruments aren't all miced and put through a pa- the drums are obviously going to sound louder and project more over the top of everything else!

oh and AJ i realised earlier we went to the same school (ACM) haha! small world

oh and no im not "animal" before anyone accuses me of being some unmusical lout
but you need to play with conviction for a kit to sound good!

Agree entirely! I'm experienced enough to understand control and dynamic. We did a show once when we had to be @38db just outside the front door. It's literally impossible sometimes!!!!!

After we are done for the night and half packed up...

Uh could you guys just do a few more?

And...

Can you play some Brittney Spears?

(said to a 50 something, all male, blues based band, by an early 20's, valley girl type, who was totally serious)

I was in a band that was auditioning guitarists. I don't ask for much, but understanding a basic 4/4 time sig is kind of a must. Anyway, I was asked the following...

"How can it be 'common' if I don't know what it's in?"

He was joking, but...

Friend of a guitarist came into our jam room, saw the other kids massive metal kit compared to my 4-piece and asked "Does that mean he's better?"

"Nah, he's like the guy who brings a shower, his laptop, a generator, etc. camping with him. I'm like the guy who goes to the woods with nothing but a knife, some string, and some creativity."

There was a percussionist in a band that I play in.He claimed to be some great drum teacher/ technique specialist. I was warming up on my practice pad before a show, and he asked me how I played paradiddles so fast and asked me how I got my singles and double strokes so clean. He kept saying, your hands are so loose and relaxed. W.T.F??? He is not in the band any more.

That's a damn good answer.

"What do you mean it's your 21st birthday???!!!"-- Manager of the bar that had unknowingly hired me for the house band when I was 19.
