Message from EvansPrez

@EvansPrez:

Great to see you here. I've used a fair few Evans heads in my time (got the EMAD on one of my kits at the moment and it sounds great) and currently enjoying the more natural finish of the Pro-Mark sticks.

The only slight issue I've found is the pitch matching between the sticks in a pair isn't always up to scratch (I'm not sure if these particular pairs are even ment to be pitch matched). It won't stop me buying them though because they seem very durable, they seem to wear evenly around the shoulder, and I prefer the more natural less laquered finish at the moment.

@Stalwart_Pandora-Chris, @uniin:

Flippin' 'eck! How hard do you guys hit that you go through sticks that quick?! :)

I'm finding Pro-Mark really durable at the moment, at least the Hickory 5B.

Great thread.

I'm a D'Addario guy and an Evans guy.
D'Addario strings are the best in the world. Period. [I'm a bass player, too.]
Evans heads sound great, last a long time, and have every desired variety.

Not a Pro Mark guy, although I have tried them,
and they are good sticks. I just never found the right one for me.

If you ever want to clone the Regal Tip stick I use, I'd be glad to join the Pro Mark
world and make it a clean sweep. :)

I use Evans blue hydraulic exclusively on my clear Zickos set. Sometimes hard to find, but I love the look and sound. I also use Remo. Both are great heads.

Ok, Rick - I have my second request. :)

About a 16" EMAD? We have a small but growing army of 16" bass drum players here - and I bet many of them would love to see a 16" EMAD.

Mr. Drumm, I'm a Remo guy myself but anyway I congratulate you for joining this forum and taking the time to read and reply to our comments. Says a lot about you and the way you run your company.

Regarding your products, if I may give a recommendation (Of course I don't know if you can do it, but anyway) it would be this:
In an effort to keep costs down, I'd change the packaging of the drumheads that are shipped to South America. I live in Uruguay and Evans heads are almost 40% more expensive than Remo.
The main difference between the two brands is that Remo's don't come in a box, they come in a plastic bag, which allows heads of the same diameter to be stacked on one another like in a tube, which most definitely keeps packaging and shipping costs down, and therefore they can be sold for less and still keep the profit margin.

Of course I'm aware that this country must represent maybe 0,0001% of your worldwide sales.. but, maybe you can get something out of this humble comment.

Cheers. :)

I concur w/ Bermuda in that I think it says a lot that the president of Evans is here answering questions. Rick seems like a straight shooter as Bermuda says, and I have a ton of respect for that.

If I were president of anything drumming related I would think that this forum in particular has the pulse on which my finger should be laid. Props to Rick for using this resource for the betterment of his product. For unbiased info straight from drummer's mouths, this place can't be beat.

Thanks Larry, we drummers have a unique brotherhood and we like sharing info. I can't say the same exists at this level for other instrumentalists.

Thank you for your suggestion. We are moving to polybag packaging in some international markets for the reasons you mention. We will definitely take a look at Uruguay to add to that program.

Good suggestion. We are going to add some 16" bass drum heads which we don't currently have as part of our Evans line. Thanks, Rick

Where are you located? We have plenty of Evans blue hydraulics in stock ready to ship. Let us know your retailer name and we will contact them. Thanks, Rick

Frank, thanks for your support. What model Regal Tip do you use? We are going to be adding a number of new models with new designs over the next several months. I believe there are number of diameters that we need to add to the line.

We are going to tighten the specs that Pro-Mark uses for weight matching. We currently use a 3 gram difference between sticks. That will be tightened to a lesser amount in the next few months. Rick

Hi Rick,

May I add to the chorus of those congratulating you on having the "spheres" to participate here. The vast majority of members are super helpful & the membership demographic is about as varied as you can get.

I've used Evans heads for many years, but also have experience of others, perhaps with the exception of Aquarian. Evans are my "go to" brand every time for both live & studio work. Also worthy of note, a superb artisan drum company I'm now involved with (Guru Drumworks) fits Evans heads to all drums unless otherwise instructed by the client.

Perhaps the biggest accolade I can bestow from my lowly position in the drumming community, is that I chose to fit Evans heads to our latest development kit for a natural 3 mic capture video. It's a world first construction, & truly something special (well, we think so). You can check it out here: http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79440

Thanks again for chiming in here Rick. It really is appreciated, & I hope you gain as much from this as we will from your presence.

Very cool drumset!!! Thank you for using Evans.

Regal Tip Combos. One of the lightest, thinnest sticks on the planet.

If I actually had the opportunity to design my own stick :) , it would be:
- Regal Tip Combo length and width
- Round nylon tip, not oval
- Taper very close to the tip, to allow a little more beef over a longer part of the stick, since it's already extremely narrow.

That would hit the spot.

After a 30 plus year vacation I am back to playing drums for about 5 years now. I have used nothing but Evans heads during this period other than the fibreskin set I am now using becuase I didn't find any vintage looking Evans heads. If Evans had a vintage looking set of heads, and by that I mean, calf skin appearance, I would snap them up. Thanks for checking in and taking the chance with us hooligans.

Yes, add me to the list of guys wishing Evans had a better "vintage" option. I've tried the Strata, which isn't bad, but wish there was a 2-ply option and the coating does not adhere to the film well. I had two heads lose small chunks of coating when first removing them from the box because the coating stuck to the cardboard better than the head itself. Disappointing, especially since the sound overall is pretty nice.

Since then I've switched to Aquarian Modern Vintage but now that Remo has expanded Skyntone to include tom sizes I've been seriously considering returning to Remo, which is something I never thought I'd do, but calf-style heads are the one thing Evans isn't providing.

.............but you can count on one hand the number of major companies who venture outside of their own forums to participate in the community. Truly, that kind of official information is better from the horse's mouth than the other end!

May I add to the chorus of those congratulating you on having the "spheres" to participate here.

+1.

I really wish there were more major manufacturers who had the foresight to participate here in the same manner as your company has. I've always found your rep 'Evans Specialist' to be extremely helpful. I really admire your (D'Addario & Co) ability to involve yourselves in the discussions and provide tips, guidance and the voice of experience without the need for the "hard sell". It's clever marketing and the non-invasive approach is commendable.

Hi Rick,
Thank you and welcome to the forum. It's people like you and the professional drummers and technicians that are willing to contribute here that help make this site so valuable. Since the opportunity is here, I wanted to ask you about an item on my "wish list". Years ago, Remo made their standard coated emperors with a white mylar film rather than clear. Somewhere along the line they changed that and I swear there was a difference in sound, which many drummers on this forum who have used them will agree. I really like coated G2's and use them on my snare and toms. I love the way they sound and the coating lasts far longer than Remo's. When the coating does start to wear though, the clear part of the underlying head shows through and it looks kind of crappy. It would be great if G2's were available in coated over white mylar rather than clear. I know I would prefer them, hopefully they would be well received. Has there been any thought or research into offering that by chance? By the way, what a great last name for the president of a drumhead company! ;o)

Also, regarding the Evans heads - which models or combination of heads did you try and on what make of drums?

Hi Rick

It was a coated head. Not sure what model, on a floor tom. It sounded good but I found it a little harder to get a good tone out of.

Thanks for replying to my post :)

I will email questions I have right now, I've thought of a good question.

Chris

Thanks for your suggestion. The white film you are referring to is called Melanex. It has some different properties than Mylar and to me tends to feel a bit stiffer. Mylar comes in hazy or clear. Melanex is very white. Coated Emperors were made of two plys of 7 mil thickenss as are the coated G2s. I will talk to our team about testing the Melenex idea.

Thanks, Rick

Hello All, Rick Drumm here. I am the president of D'Addario ........ I look forward to hearing from you.

Rick

I am a huge fan of Evans heads (I have used them since blue hydraulics came with Syndrums - did I just date myself?) and a huge fan of Pro-Mark sticks.

Last week I used Pro-Mark sticks to set a new WFD upside down drumming world record at the 2011 Summer NAMM show, I also used Pro-Mark sticks when I set the Guinness Book World Endurance Drumming Record (didn't break a single stick).

Your Pro-Mark sticks have been with me since I was a young drummer.

I think its great that you are connecting with the drummers directly. Keep up the good work,
