songs to learn.

i have been playing drums for a few years now and i would like to start learning some new songs.
I cant read drum tabs and i was wondering what is a good way to learn a song and what are some fun songs to play along to?
I mainly play rock but i would like to hear some opinions on what would be good songs to learn.

All suggestions are helpful and appreciated.

Yeah, Tool is fun and challenging. Also maybe try the Deftones. Their stuff is pretty fun to break down and learn too.

If you've only been playing for a few years then you should start out with something simple, and something you already listen to and know well. Forget Tool....for now anyways. Although they might be a lot of these other drummer's favorite band, Danny Carey is an amazing drummer that is known for writing complex, innovative, and "out of the box" type stuff. Not a good beginner to even intermediate choice. I'm not going to recommend anybody because like I said, it should just be somebody that you listen to and know already. I would also say, save the money you would spend on drum "tab" books, and buy a nice pair of "studio style/over the ear" headphones. You'll do much better with an iPod and pair of nice, loud headphones then with sheet music (my opinion). I WILL say, you're heading in the right direction though. After a few years of "dinking around" myself, I decided to start trying to play other people's music. It was a great choice. It will teach you a lot; timing, keeping up with, and playing along with other "musicians" for one. Also, it will help you to develop a "style", you'll pick up, and absorb more influence from the other drummers you choose to replicate than you might think.. So just pick a good, well known song, put on a pair of headphones, and start from the beginning. Learn in chunks. If you get to a part that you can't quite figure out right away, just listen to over and over, break it down, and learn it little by little, adding a bit more each time. That's all I got. Good luck.

The two "Groove Essentials" books/CDs (and maybe DVDs) are a great place to start playing along with others. You'll need to learn to read standard notation though (don't let this turn you off, the basics of standard notation for drums is VERY easy, and a valuable thing to know).

Yep, they are Country tunes which are thinly disguised rock songs and you will learn to groove. Don't write off Country as being easy until you have listened to these songs in their entirety! If you can read at all, the corresponding charts will help you learn them fast!

You are smart to learn songs; as one well known session drummer put when asked about the drummers who can only play really fast and loud, "They will find out where that will get them; 'Do you want fries with that, sir?'"

I agree with Mike, don't stick to one genera when learning to play the drums or anything for that matter. What you can learn from other styles will definetly help you out in the one you choose to work with the most. As for how to learn songs, there's a couple of options that I use. If it's an easier song or one I'm familiar with then I'll just jam to it through headphones til I have it down. For the tougher ones or things I can't seem to figure out, I'll check out tabs/charts for the song which can be found all over the internet or a music store.

thank you for all the suggestions.

right now im trying to learn welcome home by coheed and cambria so i go off a drum tab while listening to the music so i know the basic beat from the tab and can make any corrections from what i hear with the music. atm i dont have headphones with me so im using $7 ipod speakers that suck so its going slow. its a fun song to learn but i cant hear the music when im playing so i go off the tempo sometimes :p

i will look into more genres of music also.

thanks for the suggestions and any more posts are welcome =)

You really should invest in some isolation headphones or in ear monitors. Something that will allow you to hear what you're playing along with (metronome/music), AND protect your ears. Playing acoustic drums without protection is a VERY bad idea.

I use Etymonics 6i's and I'm very happy w/ them.

atm i have some sony headphones i got for about 50$ they don't fit around my ears but they go on my ear. i have a practice pad set and an acoustic set and lately ive been playing on the practice pad set.
