I've used steel rod washers as fair back as I can remember and I din't rememer any problems with either. I thing that the nylons muted off any vibration between the rod and the rim but that was about it. I think that the steel washers will be more robust but that the only caveat that comes to mind.

I have nylon on all of my snares, since they get tuned more often. I have found that as you get tighter the steel seem to bind when you just want a little tweak . As I change heads I will also put them on my toms. there is also a new product out that looks to be an inverted top hat that incorporates the washer and a sleeve that goes through the rim to keep the screws from touching or rubbing against the hoop.

I picked up some washers that were like a small cup that had a rubber washer attached. Made by Tama, but can't locate them anymore. I wanted them to help the heads from going out of tune during rim shots. I use stainless steel nuts now to lock them down.
My DW drums all have stainless steel washers. However I just remembered that on my Stewart Copeland Tama Snare, it does have plastic washers for some reason that I wonder about...

You can use both, steel over nylon.

I can't stand nylon washers, particularly on a snare. I tend to tune snares pretty high so I split nylon washers in no time.

In fact we actually cranked down a snare as tight as I could turn it, to the point that the bearing edge was almost above the rim, and the washers held up great.
