36" Bass Drum!

Hi everyone1 I am obviously new to the forum, but I wanted to throw a question out there. I am currently using a 28" X 14" marching drum as a kick. I love it! It's a tad sluggish, but I'm not playing speed metal or any really funky beats, so it works out very well for me.

I just acquired a 36" concert bass drum!! I am toying with the idea of converting it into a kick. Any thoughts? I know it's preposterous, but that's half the fun!

I suggest mounting a pair of rack toms on top if you decide to convert it into a kick for fun. I think that would hilarious.

Hey what do you have to lose? A little time and money? So what! If it feels good, do it. you would certainly have a "unique" sound.

haha! you only live once, why not? I'd do that for sure. y'never know maybe it will sound awsome too. what I would do is mount is on the side as a secondary kick maybe with a double pedal to trigger it. it would be hilariouse to hear these super loud THUD everynow and then from another side of your kit hahaha. Good Luck man and post pics when your done. Peace

Well, it's not totaly unheard of... Tommy Lee has been using a 40" bass drum recently.
Some pics show a side kick too. I don't know who would have a pedal beater that could work, but I'm sure there out there!

I don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard (on this forum--I forget from whom) that he puts a smaller kick inside the big one. Any proof for or against this? Anyone?

Yeah, your probably right... I kinda of figured that it was just a Show Thing :)

I remember when a 24" was Big & a 26" bass drum was humongous...lol

Best,

I dont have any proof for against but it is triggered apparently so it is just for show.So i guess that would eliminate the need for the smaller kick inside. Then again it is TommyLee.

Dude, I say go for it and let us check out the pics when you do it...we love LOVE drum porn especially big knockers ;-0

36"... now THAT'S a MAN'S bass drum! haha

I actually had an idea to make a kit with a huge concert bass drum, marching band quad toms, a marching snare, orchestra suspended cymbals, and a xylophone. that'd be ridiculous.

When you get a 36" kick, how big does that mean your toms have to be? In order to maintain the same ratio that a 10/12/14/20 fusion set has, your high tom would be an 18! For a floor tom, you'd have to mount a 24!

Here's the drum. it has no beater head or rim (both priced at around $70 sans shipping), and has no legs. I am sitting on a throne behind it.

As far as toms- with my 28" kick, I am using a 14" X 16" tom as my first rack, 16' and 18' floors. I really don't know what I'll do with the new monster. My band is filming a show for local television in February, and I'd like to use it for that.

I have a friend who has done the 22" kick inside the bigger drum... that feels like cheating to me!

I forgot to mention my wife found this drum on Craigslist for $35!!!!! It's in mint condition too, outside of the missing hoop. I have the claws for the beater side head.
