"African Rhythm and African Sensibility" and Beer

In African Rhythm and African Sensibility by John Chernoff he wrote:

"During my first day practicing with Gideon, I was following him well until he suddenly performed a rather complicated series of rhythms and then went back to the basic rhythm he was showing me. A few minutes later a man who had passed at that momentreturned with two bottles of beer. The way that Africans can talk with their drums has been investigated and described numerous tmes, but the notion of 'talking drums' has lost none of its facination for Westerners, and no general discussion of African music would be complete without a description of how a drum can speak." (p. 75)

WOW! If I could only learn that rhythm so that my drum could "talk" to my loving wife!

I've heard that same story related, only it was cokes not beer. Maybe it was a different phrase? :)
