Default kick beater hitting foot

Hey Drummerworld, D4Jesus here! I have a kick pedal question. I have a fairly inexpensive Ludwig Kick pedal and the beater is coming back and hitting the roof of my foot on hard and quick hits.
Any suggestions? Thank so much!

With out a video showing your technique, it will be hard to evaluate your situation. I do think it is a technique issue. I remember this happening to me many yrs ago. I don't know what changed to make it stop, but it did. I do know that I had been playing for around 10 or more yrs and I was using Ludwig Speed King pedals. So I don't think that my issue was pedal adjustments. Those pedals had spring tension adjustment only. Nothing else was adjustable. Well I guess the beater height was, but that's it. It may be something that you'll naturally work out of. If it's a serious problem, you should post a video so we can see what's going on. Even if it's just a cell phone video.

It happens to me sometimes but it is a very light tap.

I realize from your other post you are using your left foot, and I'm glad that you are learning another path. Have you tried shortening the batter throw a little so that it doesn't hit your foot? I don't know what pedal your using, but it's a fairly standard adjustment on pedals. If your using an IC, the beater throw and pedal height can be adjusted independent of eachother, so your foot will be at the same starting point but the beater shouldn't keep hitting your foot, because it's farther away from the top of your foot.

Don't take your foot right off the pedal..
Don't let the pedal come back all the way
Maybe your springs are too tight.
Lower the beater a bit.
Your beater angle may also be too aggressive.
Can't tell without seeing.

This isn't necessarily a 'bad' technique issue - I like to have a very long throw as it gives me a wider dynamic range to play with. Tightening the springs and shortening the beater may help, but you will make other sacrifices. I play with my foot further back on the footboard which puts the top of my foot out of range of the beater (and gets me closer to my pedal's sweet spot). I play an Iron Cobra Rolling Glide if that makes a difference?

The pedal should have some adjustment to regulate how far the pedal returns after being pressed down.

Thanks. Yes, it's a technique issue. I'll work on it. Thank you!
