You Tube sensation Cobus Potgieter at Drum Channel

I watched these clips as I haven't really heard much of his playing. I completely get the band player compared to drum cover guy thing, & there's much merit in that pov, but this is simply a strong young player who's used a promotional media to best effect in the context of what's currently popular. Good luck to him.

Also agree that having more grassroots players is good for live music. It would be terrible if music only existed at the elite level ... where would the next generation of great players come from?

Well, a genuine, participatory musical culture would be ideal, but at least in America (most of it, anyway) that's not happening. Music is not a thing that happens alone with you and your camera(!) and somebody else's record. But this cover thing is much healthier than the other online trend of people ogling at what are basically pornographic, context-free displays of facility. I don't know what average hobbyists are supposed to do with that- keep looking for the next dazzling video until they burn out and give up in the face of the impossibility of ever being that "good"? I can't see how those do anything but train people to think that music is a) something they can't do, and b) basically equivalent in content to a fresh hit of crack.

Strong, young drummer doing a cover song. Well done. Better drummer than me? Probably. But to get my attention, do something original and creative. I look forward to seeing the great things you will be doing in 5-10 years from now. Good luck Cobus.

I don't see why everyone is saying he is not so good. Especially saying he can't be in a band! Most of these guys have bands, and I would not be at all surprised if he could be in one. He obviously has great timing. And even if he is not in a band, you can't say that he should just go in a band. Some people don't have the opportunity (For Cobus when he was first starting I imagine - but now he most likely has lots of opportunities) to join bands just like that.

Cobus is a drummer and an entertainer, and I see absolutely nothing wrong with what he's doing. We all choose to use our talents in different ways. He may overplay, but he has fun, and it's very clear that he loves drumming, why take that away from him?

Congrats to him on his 80 million plus views, endorsements, and all of his accomplishments! I'm incredibly jealous of him.

Also he plays in a band with a South African name that I can't pronounce and he has been called in as a session drummer and producer by a bunch of relatively popular international artists. He's good and creative. He also doesn't overplay in studio situations.

Honestly, I pray every day to know what the hell is his secret O-o....good for him though...

Not every one can play , or even wants to play, in a band but -- they have a ton of passion for the drums and want to play by whatever method they can weather covers, solos, etc., and never leave their drum room. And I'm sure, like me, those people have total respect and admiration for those of you that do play in bands… Every person's situation is different…

He's a good drummer, but I really don't like his style and feel. He's good at promoting himself too.
