I Need Help Choosing an Electronic Kit

I've been drumming on and off for about 5 years. i haven't been getting any better and this is directly due to the fact that I do not have a drum set at my house. I live in a town home and keep my acoustic kit at a friends house.

I am 17 years old and maybe could spend around 2,000 max. I've seen the main brands are Roland, Alesis, Simmons, Pearl, and Yamaha. What would you recommend for 2,000 and under, I need to be able to practice, have good realistic sound, and I would like to be able to record with it.

Here are the sets that I think fit me best

Roland TD-9SX: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Roland-TD-9SX-Electronic-Drum-Set-491359-i2023269.gc

Alesis DM10 Studio: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Alesis-DM10-Studio-Drum-Kit-105956031-i1522247.gc

Simmons SD9K: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Simmons-SD9K-Electronic-Drum-Set-483503-i1401445.gc

Recommend a set to me, and tell me why you like it.

IMO build quality is not in alesis or simmons. Pearl kit is poor electric, poor acoustic...all for 3k.

Stick with Roland or yamaha. From a Roland standpoint...the "pro" models (td12 td20) are out of your price range new. I'd hold out and look for a deal on a used td12. Guitar center has 2 used td12s online right now for 2500 each.

IMO you won't be happy with a td9 or lower Roland...it's just not good enough. So if you want to get a set just to play on just "go cheap" and get a used td3 or td4 for practice time. There is no acoustic substitute in the ekit market at your price range IMO.

If you haven't decided yet, have a look at the Yamaha DTX550. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have a DTX950 and it kicks a** !!

Since youll probably be going to college soon...im assuming, then you should consider the four years your about to put your new e-kit through.since it will be treated like a clothes hanger/beer pong table you may as well get a cheap used kit.Dont worry too much if its yamaha, roland or alesis.A cheap td-3 isnt any better than the alesis studio kits.Go cheap and assume you wont have the dough for new triggers and modules when you come back to the dorm and one of your roomates used a drum as a dinner plate.

If its too nice you wont bring it with you,and then its in the same category as your acoustic kit.
