A Gentler Beatnik?

I happened to unpack a dusty Beatnik I bought back in 2006. And I wondered why I had packed it away, as I would love to know just how horrible my rolls are when compared to a theoretical, robot drummer version of me.

Then I tried to play it and quickly found out why: you have to beat the damn thing to get it to register. This makes a lot of noise. It's about as loud as playing Rock Band or something like that, on those awful plastic pads.

Does anybody know of a gentler Beatnik? Living in an apartment means I can't be pounding on hard plastic/rubber surfaces with sticks at night. Something more sensitive and with a softer surface?

You can't adjust the sensitivity?

Roland has similar pads, I have the RMP-5, it has a mesh head (w/ adjustable sensitivity). It sounds like any other mesh head edrum; not silent, but I can play it while my wife watches TV in the next room...
