practice pads/rubber cymbals

Hey everybody,
I had just started to get really into drumming when I had to go off to college. I've thought about it and it seems that bringing my acoustic set into my dorm room (even with mutes) isn't really an option. On top of that I'm pretty short on cash (around 300 dollars) so I def. don't have enough to buy an electric set, and even if I did have enough that's not what I'd choose to spend my money on anyway. Instead I've started looking into practice pad sets, like this two:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-5Piece-Practice-Pad-Set?sku=442963

I was also looking into rubber cymbals like these:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pintech-5Piece-Practice-Cymbal-Set?sku=444926

I think that if I got a practice pad set and some rubber cymbals I could have a pretty cool little dorm-worthy setup and for a good price too, but I'm still not sure what I want to do.

Do you guys have any opinions? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

A practice pad kit is a fantastic idea! Its courteous, ideal and definately worth the purchase if its needed. Plus, IMO it really helps with keeping practice simple and yet allows you to practice at all times of the day/night.

Buy it!

Sounds like a good idea, but I'll warn you against that Remo set. I can't speak for the set itself but I hate that style of pads. They're quite loud and the feel is less than fun. They won't have the volume of acoustic drums obviously, but you'll still end up with an annoyed roommate.

yeah, listen to hauk. i have the remo practice kit and i like it and everything. but its loud, no good for a dorm room or apartment. it is good for the fact that you can hear yourself better.

Try the DW Go Anywhere set. I bought one the other day and it's really nice and quiet. You only get four pads (plus one for the pedal), but I already had another pad on a stand which I use like a ride.

Question.... Has anyone ever tried a practice pad that you strap onto your knee? Its seems like it would be something I could do while I'm at work when I'm not busy. Sorry, I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread, or just post on this one. I'm kinda new at this whole forum thing.

I think that the practice pad idea is great and if it were me I think that I would go for that DW go anywhere deal as well. OR you could do as a friend of mine did, when he went to college he rented a storage space, put his drums in there and went to practice...a lot of extra expense and all but that is how my buddy handled his dilema!
