Default holding on to hi hat - bass solos

Hey guys! Ive noticed that very many famous jazz drummers hold on to their hi hats while playing the spang spangalang spangalang - beat on it. ALmost always during bass solos...

Why is this? :)

Muting the cymbals so you can hear the bass, maybe?
