Default Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

I've owned 4 kits since I started playing (26 years)
1. 5 pc. Percussion Plus (used) complete POS, but it was a starter set.
2. 6 pc. Ludwig Classic (used) 13,14,16,18, 22 & 6.5x14" SuperPhonic snare. The snare would cut through anything and the floor toms sounded awesome. The floors had modular mounts and were suspended from a double tom stand. Never heard anything like. I traded them in because the hardware was going to hell.
3. 9 pc. Ludwig Rocker (used) Your standard double bass heavy metal kit with 24" bass drums. I would of kept this kit if it didn't get ruined by a flooded basement. The bass drum shells delaminated.
4. 7 pc. Tama Starclassic Performer kit 10,12,13,14,16, 22, 6.5x14 brass snare. I bought this new in '96 and it has held up pretty good. Only issue is that I should of bought an 18" floor tom to go along with it.

If I ever get another kit, it will be a Ludwig Classic like my 2nd kit.

Cool to see this thread pop up again, and surprised I never responded.

I've owned four kits, two of which I still own. The first was a Japanese stencil kit in black diamond pearl, 12/14/20 with a Ludwig Pioneer snare. A year or two later I got another cheap stencil kit from the Sears catalog in 12/13/16/22. I actually combined the two and played them for several years as a huge hodgepodge kit until I sold them and picked up set number 3, a first-series Yamaha Stage Custom, 8/10/12/14/16/20. I am now mostly playing kit 4, my refurbished Ludwig Standards, 13/16/22.

Technically five.

My first kit was a 4 pc. Lyra (MIJ) white marine pear. Donated it to my old high school in 1978.

In 1973 I bought a 5 pc. clear Zickos kit which lasted till it was stolen a couple of years ago.

In the early 1990's I bought a 3 pc. no name MIJ blue kit to use for pit work when I didn't want to worry about leaving a kit for long periods of time.

In the mid 90's I bought a grey (or maybe it's green, depends on the light) Pearl Forum 5 pc. kit. I use these last two in my teaching studio.

In 2012, I bought piecemeal a 7 pc. clear Zickos kit when my original one was stolen. It is very versatile because it can be used in many different configurations form a 3 pc. to a 7 pc. Mainly I use it as a 5 pc. Pictures of most of these have appeared on this web site from time to time.

So, currently I have three kits.

What a fun thread, as well as a reminder that very few of us start on top of the line equipment.

My first kit was a Whitehall (Pearl) four-piece, 13/16/20, gold sparkle with whatever Slingerland snare drum Buddy Rich had. I remember my parents surprising me with it when I was about 13, and how hard I tried to conceal my disappointment that it wasn't a newer, nicer kit instead of a third- or fourth-hand one. I hated the color then; now, I think gold sparkle looks boss.

My second kit was also a Whitehall. (I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who ever had two Whitehall kits.) It was a red sparkle five-piece, 12/13/16/22, but still with the same snare. It stayed home when I went off to college; I've no idea what happened to it.

I didn't own a kit for almost a decade after that, but I was still playing. My main gig in the mid 90s was with an alt-country band where all I played was a snare drum and a splash cymbal. The drum was a maple Purecussion 5x14, and it was sweet, probably the best snare I've ever owned. The cymbal was a 10" Paiste 502 (at least I think it was 10"; it was definitely a Paiste 502). I played with brushes, standing up. Very fun gig.

In 1998 I treated myself to a brand new set of Yamaha Stage Customs, 10/12/14/22, even though I was living in the sticks and not playing out ever. That was a nice kit. I sold it when I moved back to the city and into an apartment.

Now I'm married with three kids, living in a small town, and at the moment I don't have a complete kit. I have a nice set of big-R Rogers shells in Koa finish but the parts to put them back together are a bit beyond my reach at the moment. I also have a Sonor piccolo snare and a lovely blue sparkle Slingerland 16" floor tom from the 1970s. I keep thinking of making a jungle kit but I'm not sure that would be any cheaper than just going out and buying a beat-up used kit. I'm a hobbyist and and I'm happy being a hobbyist. I'd love a nice set of pro-quality drums but more than that I just want to start playing again.

In 1966 I bought a set of used Gretsch which I played thru high school. After that I bought a set of Sonors and kept them til about 1972 when I bought a set of Rogers. In 2012 I bought my current set of Pearl VB which are serving me well as I only play for my own enjoyment. Oh yeah I have a Ludwig Epic Brick Snare drum.

One.
I still have my Slingerland set from 1983. Although I think it may be time to get a new kit.
I understand there's been some advances!

I didn't really own what I consider my first kit, but I took care of that kit like it was my own a really grew as a player on it. It was a wine red wrapper Schafer (MIJ) kit that I stripped the ugly wrap off and refinished in a flat black with sprayed stencil graphics.

When I left that band and had to give that kit back to its owner and I bought myself a metallic silver Yamaha Stage Custom in 24, 16, 12 that I later had wrapped in a red snakeskin fabric and the kick sliced down to 14" deep.

Most recently I bought a Drumcraft of orphaned flat, black shells in a 20x18, 18, 14 (ft), 13. Had the kick sliced down to a 14" depth again.

So 3 kits.

Default Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

I've had 3 in 45 years. I still have them all. :-) I also got a set of roland pads when they first came out, but I never really used as 'drums'.

1969: Ludwig Psychedelic Red Pearl Gen 1. 22x16bass, 16x16 floor and 8x12 tom and 5x14 steel snare. Around 1972 or so I added a 9x13 tom, but it was Gen 2 of the color so it was not an exact match.

1978: Sonor Phonic in Metallic Lilac. 22x16 bass, 6x10 concert tom, 8x12 concert tom, 9x13 concert tom, 10x14 concert tom, 16x16 floor tom and D525 Snare. Concert toms were single headed, and the die hard Sonor geeks will know what the D525 was. ;-)

2013: Sonor ProLite in Walnut Brown. 24x17.5 bass, 7x8 tom, 8x10 tom. 9x13 tom,16x16 floor tom, 14x5 (matching) snare.

IMHO, I believe that you get what you pay for. The sound of each of the Sonor sets was always way above average. As for the hardware, even today there is no pitting at all on any of the hardware lugs and hoops on the Phonic set. So to the young person that started the thread and to those starting out, consider that if you get what you like and take care of them, even if they are a bit more than you planned, good drums will pay for themselves more than once over and you will be very happy when you play them. And any good set can last a very long time.

I've had three. First was a set of random pieces thrown together by a group of friends because we needed a drummer and I was elected. It consisted of a bass, snare, floor tom, one cymbal and hi hat. There was duct tape everywhere and it sounded terrible. I loved it! That was in 1997 give or take a year. Then I had a Sonor Force 2001, which sounded pretty great, and my DW Performance series. I'm pretty well set now. I know people say that a lot, but...

Let me think hard... Ah yes - now I have it!
I have _one_ drumset: Sonor Delite (4-piece, tiger finish), bought new in Aug., 2012.
My first and only. And I have no idea whether/when I'll ever switch/'upgrade' to something else.

Hey, I just bought my first electric guitar in 2011. I've been "trying" to play guitar for twenty years on an acoustic. Now I don't even own an acoustic.

Anyway, back to drums.

HAga, Andy, I was gonna say something about a Bo update. :)

Nice old thread! So, here the sets I owned and still own:
  • 1975: Meazzi Hollywood, 4 piece - very nice set;
  • 1977: Slingerland, 5 piece - still own the snare drum;
  • 1986: Pearl DX, 6 piece (actually the snare drum was a Tama);
  • 1989: Pearl GLX, 6 piece;
  • 1991: Tamburo Original maple stave set, 7 piece - still own it and still love it;
  • 2008: Tamburo Original mutenye stave set, 5 piece, built in 1991 - still own it and still love it.
To be added: a few snare drums (Ludwig Supra COB, Slingerland COB, a couple of Tamburo / Volume maple stave).

Default Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

Past
Sonor Force 1007 5pc (first kit)
Zenith (10, 12, 14, 20)
Slingerland Radio King (decided I didn’t like dealing with vintage drums)
Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz (have had three of these, donated one to my son’s school)
Gretsch Renown 4pc (24 kick)
Sonor Arena Maple 3pc
Sonor Bop
Yamaha Stage Custom bop
P. Ellis Custom mahogany kit (bop sizes)
Taye Studio Birch (20, 12, 14)
Taye Studio Birch (bop sizes)
Taye Parasonic (20, 10, 12, 14)
Taye GoKit (really hated this kit)
DW Performance (20, 12, 16)
Ludwig Classic Maple (20, 12, 14)
Yamaha Club Custom (22, 12, 16)

Current
Gretsch New Classic bop (I’ve had two of these, stupidly sold the first one)
Canopus Neo Vintage 60 M1
Gretsch Catalina Club Street
DW Design Series Frequent Flyer (on order)

Ramdom thoughts:

1. Taye for the most part makes really nice kits at a very good price, with a really funky mounting system for the rack toms. They are largely worthless for resale.

2. Gretsch New Classics sound amazing. Very warm and round, musical tone.

3. Best kits I’ve owned in terms of sound (very subjective) in order are: Canopus NV60 M1, Gretsch New Classic bop, Yamaha Club Custom, DW Performance, Ludwig Classic Maple

4. Best kits I’ve owned in terms of quality of construction in order are: Canopus NV60 M1, DW Performance, Yamaha Club Custom, Gretsch New Classic, Ludwig Classic Maple. And in all honesty, after the Canopus I don’t see much difference. They are all really well made.

5. Worst kit in the bunch was the Taye GoKit. Toms sounded ok, snare was horrid (and came with parts rolling around inside when I got it), and the bass drum sounded like a cardboard box (and not a very good sounding cardboard box).

Hmmm, let's see...

Ludwig Accent
Pearl Masters Studio BSX
DW Pre-Collectors Series
Ludwig Stainless Steel

The only drum kit I've sold was the DWs. That was my gigging kit and the toms were just too small for what I was looking for, but that Regal-to-Royal Blue Fade is still one of the prettiest finishes I've ever seen. However, the polished Stainless Ludwigs are cool as f&ck and it'll turn some heads and maybe blind one or two people.

Snare drums are a different matter entirely...

I love that system. When I started playing in my first band my buddy came across a drum set in a trade somehow and we put my friend that played bass on the drums. He later game me my first lesson and was the actual owner of the red MIJ kit that I mentioned.

I love when someone dredges up a 2 year old thread!

I've owned 17 kits and currently have 6 of them. I had a good reason for selling each one, but of course sometimes have second thoughts about some of my past sales. The one I really kick myself on, was a great little Yamaha BCA in Black Sparkle. Bought it brand spankin' new for $1500 for 5 piece. I had to sell it (long story, which I will spare you of). I got back what I paid, but I want to cry when I think about how cool that kit was. Guitar Center recently had a similar used kit listed for a while. I would have pulled the trigger on it, but didn't have the extra cash at the time it was listed for sale. I'm piecing together a BCAN in Cherrywood to replace the Black Sparkle kit.

Past:
Stewart stencil kit in Black Pearl
Rogers Red Ripple MIJ (cool finish, made by Yamaha?)
Ludwig maples in Butcher Block Cortex
Yamaha RC in Sunset Brown (rare matte finish, only sold in Japan. Precursor to Antique Burst)
Yamaha RC Piano Black
Yamaha RC Hot Red
Yamaha Maple Custom Turquoise
Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute Black Sparkle
2 Extra Yamaha RC Black Kits drums I had collected, recently sold
An Extra Pearl Reference Kit drums I had collected, recently sold

Current:
Yamaha RC Piano Black (different than above kits)
Pearl Reference Copperfire Sparkle (different than above kit)
Yamaha 1980s Tour Custom Mellow Yellow
1966 Ludwig Gold Sparkle
Yamaha Oak Custom Bryce Canyon Brown
Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute Nouveau Cherrywood (piecing this together-have a kit)

I'm on my 17th kit. I still have 7 of them. Looking to sell my DW's I think. Or my champagne sparkle 66 Luds. I just can't bring myself to photograph them and list them. So I probably won't.

1) Hayman, probably birch, 20, 12, 16 in gold wrap,

2) Premier APK, unknown, 22, 12, 13, 16 in walnut

3) Premier Genista, Birch, 20, 10, 12, 14 in Damask Red

4) Gary Noonan Stave, Maple, 22, 12, 13, 16 in Cherry Red

5) Yamaha Custom Absolute Nouveau, Maple, 22, 12, 13,16 in Cherry

I have been gigging regularly since 1985 and tend to run my kits until they fall apart and then replace them wholesale (kits 1-3) long since sold. Currently use 4 for recording and non-kit share gigs and 5 for rehearsals and kit share gigs.

I started out in the late 80's, and my first kit was a Simmons SDS8 (horrendous thing but at least I could play it at home)

I then traded that in against a Pearl BLX in gun metal grey, which was a beauty.

The band then broke up and I stopped playing for 20 years (BAD mistake in retrospect).

I started again a year or so again and picked up a cheap Recording Custom, and have now graduated to a Gretsch USA Standard kit. Although having played that Sakae Almighty last week that's got me thinking....

To date I've owned four kits.

First Kit (1967): a 5-piece Stewart in Black Agate wrap.

Second Kit (1980): a Yamaha kit in black wrap with a full set of concert toms, 22" and 24" kick drums, 14" and 16" floor toms.

Third Kit (1988): a 6-piece Yamaha Recording Custom series with all suspended power toms in Stage White finish; 22, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16.

Current Kit (2013): Yamaha Recording Custom in Antique Burst: 20", 22" and 24' kick drums; 12" and 13" rack toms, 14" and 16" floor toms. All traditional sizes.

These days I'm typically playing a one up two down arrangement and I can pick and choose what size kick and toms to use. Options are a good thing.

In late '91 or early '92 (can't remember which) I bought a Tama Rockstar DX 5 piece kit. Candy Apple Red with Zildjian crashes and ride. It sounded great and I couldn't have asked for a better kit to start off with. I sold it around '98 and have regretted it every since. I'm digging around for any old pics of it I can share.

Currently I own 2. I have owned 4 in total.

How do you define "professional level"? None of my kits were even close to the high end of the manufactures line but I would not have hesitated to take them to any gig. The tuned up well and sounded great.

Current:
PDP Concept Maple
PDP CXR

Former
Mapex M Birch
Gretsch Catalina Jazz
