Default Restoring WFL 15x8 Snare - need advice on snare wires

Vintage Gear guys,

Can someone recommend snare wires (strand count) for an original WFL 15x8 Auditorium snare drum? I'm restoring it now, it's missing the original snares and reso head, I'm OK with doing every thing else but I just don't know where to begin with snare wires. Basically, I play prog-metal, heavy rock and funk. I hit hard yet can't function without ghosting, accents and etc. (trying Garibaldi's/Purdie's methods). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

Taking a quick look at Interstate Music shows both Puresound and Fat Cat make 15" wires. I've used both brands and I personally don't hear the $10 difference in price, so I'd recommend the Fat Cats. I'm using Fat Cat wires on my 14x8" Mapex snare and I like them a lot.

As far wire count goes I think that comes down to personal preference. I've not had any problem getting enough response with as few as 12 strands, and even though a lot of guys swear by 42 strand sets when I tried it I thought it was way too wet and "snare-y" for my taste. Anymore I just usually run the "normal" 20 strand on most of my drums, whether they're 5.5, 6.5, or 8" deep.

I like Puresound, personal preference.

Looks like your only option with Puresound is going to be the 20 strand Customs. Sad, I do wish they offered their Concert snare wires in a 15". Some older snares have a very narrow snare bed that won't accommodate modern wires.

How does the snare bed look? Is it very deep and narrow? Try holding up a 20 strand snare up to it and see how it fits, Maybe snap a picture.
Classy grip all day.
