Default What are some unpopular opinions you have (music related)?

This thread may get shot down and turn into a firestorm, but I thought it would be fun for a little while at least.

Ok, here are the rules - Whenever replying to this thread, try to phrase it something like "I sort of get why people like them, I've never been a huge fan of Led Zepplin" as opposed to "Zepplin sucks, and Bonham is overrated." I'd like this to be more of a learning experience for folks on here than mud-slinging.

Do you have any unpopular music-based opinions?

Here are mine:

1. I don't think Nickelback is a bad band. I just think they play bad songs.

2. I don't like Rush. I wish I did, but I simply don't.

3. I've never listened to "Freebird" all the way through from start to finish. I've heard the entire song many, many times; however, I've only heard it piece by piece.

How about you?

-I find Jimmy Hendrix to be rather over-rated. He was a great guitarist but I believe Page and Beck to be the innovators of that era. I would even rate Peter Green above Hendrix.

-The period from 1985 to 1990 was a horrible time for rock music. Commercialism, formulamatic production, and overly cliche'd lyrics ran rampant.

There's as much good music being made today as in the past. It just takes more work to find it.

I have some incredibly unpopular opinions on certain artists. Acts I find highly overrated include the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Ramones, AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen.

I think one of the reasons why I'm not into the stones or Led Zep is the hammy vocals with the put on American accent, which I find embarrassing. Bonham and Watts are of course legends in their own rights. Sometimes there's no particular reason why you don't like something. It just doesn't get your juices flowing. If you're just not into something, you can't pretend to like it just so you get approval from others.

There was this guy who went my then-church about 20 years ago or so who was a bit of a loner who would always invite some of us then-younger guys to come over and watch a movie and order pizza. We would go over just to be nice, but he was rather annoying.

This guy was a huge Rush fan...and he got this idea that everyone who plays drums love Peart. I told him, as nicely as I could on MULTIPLE occasions, that I was not a fan of Rush. Well, one time I made the mistake of being the first person over to his place, and he ordered that I sit down and watch part of a Rush DVD he had. It got to one of Neil's solos, and he kept staring at the TV, then at me, the TV, me, TV, me, back and forth, back and forth the whole time just waiting for some sort of reaction. I tried my best to act interested. Good lord it was awkward. I felt so bad for this guy, but geez, I don't think I ever went back over there.

I don't like the Beatles.

I don't like the way Neil Peart plays.

DW drums are overrated and look ugly.

Keith Moon was awful.

I always liked the Stones over the Beatles because they made no pretense of being good. They are renown for some terrible concerts over the years and some stinker albums-but still what's not to love (like a terrible garage band that made good lol). It's like Bob Dylan can't sing-but what's not to love about him. I think lots of great songs from Rush, Led Zeppelin, etc have just had so much play people are burned out. I love the original Allman bros band-but I don't really care to listen to it again. I really don't search out old rock and roll-if it comes on I'll find something else, but "on occasion" an old hit will grab me again. It's still great music just how many times do you have to listen to it before you've memorized most. I think our brain gets bored and searches out for something new or different. But I go through moods like crazy about jazz ( still don't have the touch), fanatic over Steely Dan I bet a year, now I'm grooving on funk and old R&B , and looking at up and coming groups. I guess sometimes bad is good cause given the examples we sure seem to relish it. Like Buddy said "There is only good music and bad music" yep and both are equally as popular-in fact the bad likely outweighs the good the more I think about it. This could be a long, long, long.......thread.

I don't think growling into a microphone is even the least bit musical. Metal musicians may have chops, speed, and talent--but if you have to growl, I won't listen to that crap.

I think Jazz played at 175 bpm is just ego. "Hey, look at us." Being able to hit all of the sour ugly notes in a matter of seconds says what about your talent?

New music today should be listed under technology instead of, music. There's nothing musical about using software to lay out a song and then play your 3 guitar chords over it and sing.

Does anyone write "LYRICS" today? It seems like most popular songs have no story to tell. It's just a line, or even a word. "Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate. Damn straight Taylor, jeez.

I think Lars Ulrich gets a bad rap for no good reason. Yeah, people think his drumming is boring and uninspired and that he can't keep time for shit, but have you listened to the other members of that band? They all suck at keeping time and Kirk Hammet can't play a solo to save his life. James is still okay, but his voice has turned into some sort of strange chanting instead of singing. Overall, the band all plays at a level equal to each other and they still make bank. So criticize Lars all you want, the guy is no worse than the rest of his band mates.

From the rules section,

"Please do not start a new thread to discuss how much you don't like someone or something. "

Why be negative? It serves no purpose. Sorry.
