Default Spaun snare drums

How are they? I have an opportunity to buy a 6"x14" maple snare at a really good price. How is the quality of their snares in general? This will be my first "pro level" snare.

Link to the snare: http://spaundrums.com/snaredrums/sna...oss-black.html

Would this be a pretty good purchase?

If you want a vented snare, they're as good as others out there, if not a bit better than most if you value construction detail. Keller shell with generic hardware except for Spaun's well made lugs. Spaun's stuff is well made. Depending on what sound you're shooting for, you could do better, especially used.

What kind of sound are those vents going to make the drum produce?

I do not care for the sound of vented snares. I have a friend who has one. He might as well be hitting a phone book.

Do large vents have any effect on sensitivity of the drum?

I'll agree that extreme venting can dry up the sound quite a bit, but hardly like a phonebook or a box! You can only get that through tuning and muffling.

My ultimate vented snare sounds as lively and sensitive as you please:

so no, a few holes in the Spaun shell shouldn't have a dramatic effect on sensitivity, and you can expect a little more articulation.

Spaun does nice work though, edges are true and the finshes smooth. When you say a "good price", how much is that?

Thats an interesting snare you have there. The price is around $150 for it.

That's well worth it for that snare, go for it!

Oh agreed! When the OP posted the link showing over $500, that's what prompted my remark. At $150, you'd struggle to buy the hardware for that. Bargain.

Spaun do finish their drums well.
