Default Important announcement - Guru Drums

I wanted to post this here first, although this press release will appear elsewhere this evening too. Happy to add detail, although I think the statement states all the basics.

It just remains for me to thank all of you, this forum, & the entire community for such wonderful support from the very start. I post this with a very heavy heart.

My fondest regards, Andy.

Wow Andy I understand completely and I'm supportive of your decision-but right now I can't breathe from the gut punch. Best wishes though Andy-you can retire from the profession with pride in job well done-believe me so many owners, peers, and fans appreciate your integrity, effort, and high standards. Hey my ovangkol hoops have increased in value-I promise I'll never sell them to Jo Jo LOL. I'll never sell them period. I was just checking out your site shopping area and I see two kits and multiple snares-that it? Being on blood thinners staying out of the shop area is a great idea. As I age my skin is so frail every time I go in the woods I come out a bloody mess. Your not retiring from Fired Up are you? I don't think my heart can take it.

This is completely understandable, but completely sad. You have always taken great pride in your business and brand, and I can only imagine the swirl of emotions you're experiencing right now. Support and respect in equal measures, and I hope you continue to recover.

So what you had about a 7 year run with Guru? Even if someone bought it....they aren't Andy Crosby. The world just lost some great instruments and instrument makers.

Will Dean continue making Guru Drums as he did before you joined forces?

What do you think the chances of selling the business are?

I'm guessing you won't sell to just anybody.

I just wonder what the hell you will do with all the time you are freeing up.

You're not the kind to sit home watching tv.

You must have thought about this.

I'd rather have Andy and no Guru drums, than no Andy and no Guru drums.

I'm very grateful that I got what I needed from you. Who could have seen this coming?

Debt of gratitude owed to you for everything you did and are.

Of course health and family come first before business. Hoping that success follows you in all your efforts.

I'm convinced your drums will be cherished and coveted as collectable right with the other famous names of the drum building craft.

I'm sure you didn't make this decision on the spur of the moment, so I'm behind you 100%. Without your health, you are no good to anyone. Rest and relax and heal. Best wishes. johnny

Not the news I was exactly expecting to hear today.

Totally behind your decision. Family and health first. You've made the wise choice here, no matter how difficult it was to make.

Andy, you're one of a kind! Appreciate you more than you'll ever know. Thanks for answering all my questions and for the "Guru Education".

Indebted.

Health and family come first, a well earned retirement, although I reckon there's gonna be some crazy snares coming out of the shed when you get bored!

See ya in Manchester!

This is such a bummer. I now have no future set of Ferrari quality drums to lust after if and how I ever get any extra cash.

I wish you the best for whatever the future holds, Andy. Your health is #1, and your decision is completely understandable.

Not surprised to hear this, given the recent events. You have made an impact in the drumming world and set very high standards. I can only imagine what you have so painstakingly created will continue to drive the instrument and industry to new heights.

You are absolutely making the right decision for your health and family. Glad you're slowing things down to some extent.

Andy, your ethics and character have never wavered. I know this decision must have been extremely hard but at the same time what was best for you and your family.

I'm very proud and honored to own and play a Guru snare. It's truly the most exquisite snare I've ever heard or played. Nothing compares to it. Thank you Andy for all you've done for drummers and the drumming community. You truly are a gem of a human being.

That was my first selfish thought, too. Guru is a category of it's own and I had a quite long term goal to get myself one o' them suckers.

Maybe Larry will give me his guru gear when he's got too much stuff again. Sigh.

+1 I'm absolutely, utterly humbled to play something of this quality.

I've wondered if you ever felt like Stradivarius handing one of his violins to a gorilla when you shipped me my snares.

Thank you all for your kind words & best wishes. I've been overwhelmed by the responses & kindness over the last couple of hours, as well as requests to buy the last of our instruments.

Here's a couple of answers:

I'm not giving up playing - quite the reverse. This will hopefully release more time next year for playing activities.

Dean will not be continuing with shell production outside of existing commitments or facilitating a handover if that should be required.

I'll never say never to building drums again long term, but it's not something I'm planning on doing. Certainly, the chances of me ever building full kits again is zero.

There will be a list of final build instruments published in due course.

We will not be taking on any more commissions.

I will retain the finishing shop for some time to honour our commitment to service, as well as availability of bespoke Guru components.

If there's any news of continuation under different ownership, I'll be sure to provide details.

As I don't own an Origin series kit, I just might build a show stopper as my personal legacy instrument. I'll continue to gig & record my walnut Tour series kit. I'm also refurbishing the original exoskeletal prototype kit next year.

Sad, but completely understandable. You only get so much time...family and personal health are priority.

Now, I’m considering taking the plunge and buying one of your snares while I can.

Thank you again for your kind thoughts guys.

I've found the last 24 hours emotionally tough - swinging between relief of clarity through to deep disappointment. Somewhat perversely, this decision leaves me even more busy than usual over the coming months, but I'm hoping for some clear water in my life next year.

Absolutely - I'm here as Andy the drummer, not Andy the drum company owner. A small benefit of being disconnected from the accusation of commercial bias, is I'll be free to comment here again on drum related stuff - haven't done that in a while :)

Just to add some pictorial interest to this thread, here's the last ever batch of raw padauk shells that shipped into the finishing shop today. There's a bigger batch of Walnut + some maple shells inbound in two weeks time. Once all that's finished up - that's me done apart from listing all the remaining instruments for sale (approx 8 kits & 20 snares). 3 Tour kits already sold today! I'm currently one day's work away from shipping the last two built Origin series kits out to a US client, leaving only two remaining.

There - my latest update - still a way too busy boy.

I am faced with the twin challenges of trying to convince my wife to agree for us to buy one of the remaining Guru snares, and doing so before they're all spoken for.

I predict Guru will become a coveted mark for collectors in due course.

Andy one of those shells has no rerings.Am I seeing that correctly? If so is that the only segmented drum you made with a straight shell? Are you at liberty to divulge?

I really can't believe it's probably over.

Well shit!!

I get this Andy. I really do.

I do also think Dean should be on the lookout for a business manager to replace you though. He made great drums before you got there. I think it’s a shame to think no one else will be able to steer the ship when you’ve gone. Especially if you can point them in the right direction before you’re done.

Regardless. Rest easy and enjoy a job well done my friend!! It’s a serious testament to your nouse, input and labour!! Take a bow.

Thank you my inverted friend :)

There's a multitude of reasons why Dean won't be continuing, but I can't go into that here. Additionally, the Guru instruments of today are way different to Dean's originals (& much more challenging too) in almost every possible way. The only way Guru will continue is if someone else takes it over. Dean produces the raw shells - I do absolutely everything else, so it's way way more than just managing the commercial side of the business. If anyone does want to buy & run the business, we have a support / training / key equipment package to enable that to happen. If not, it will cease. It's not about the money - it's never been about the money. My payback is my pride in achieving something almost everyone in the business told me was not possible or viable.

We've made straight shell segment before. Honestly, it's an end of batch shell that didn't work out correctly, so it's just with me to see if I can do something interesting with it - I likely will :)

The stupid level of interest I've had in the last drums (built by Dean & myself) would certainly point to some seeing value somewhere, but I couldn't possibly predict how we'll be remembered / regarded in future years. Certainly, I'd caution anyone against buying one of our instruments based purely on perceived investment value. If someone likes what we do, & will enjoy it's unique characteristics, that's the only basis I'd advise basing any decision on.

Interestingly, I have emails from a number of very well known players wanting instruments. I didn't expect that.

Aren't they just, but that natural vibrant orange of the raw shell is soon replaced by a deep red / burnt orange.

Trust me, I've always *wanted* one, because they're spiffy instruments (not because they're investments, though they are that too)... it just didn't occur to me that availability might sunset this abruptly.

I'm thinking the left kidney can pay for it. It hasn't been pulling its weight lately.

Andy,

This is really big news. If I make it all about me, there's a weird mixture of feeling very sad about the loss whilst also very fortunate to own and play your drums.

Of course, it's not about me and it's from that space that I understand you've made a decision that is best for you and the people most important to you in life. And, I'm happy that once again, we'll have full access to your knowledge and experience here on the forum.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the inspiration I experience "watching" you respond to the changes life has brought your way. Interesting, but it gets me feeling a bit better equipped to deal my own life challenges. I thank you for that my friend and raise a toast. Here's to all of us engaging with life on our own terms.

Thank you for your kind words Jason, & it pleases greatly you continue to enjoy your drums.

I'm a stoic individual by nature, but I also recognise not everyone is wired that way. My belligerent attitude to heath adversity is my way of dealing with it, but everyone must find their own journey support structure.
