Today-ay-ay-ay's wake 'n break is built around a traditional batucada bell pattern, and it's on top of a plodding bass drum part similar to Bonham's stomp in Kashmir. Taking the bell pattern first, let's label each bell in the order they're played. Our first bell is falling on 1 and on the "e" and "a" of 4. The next bell is falling on the "and" of 1 and on 2. Our third bell is falling on the "and" of 2 and on 3. Finally, our last bell is falling on the "and" and "a" of 3. Moving along to the bass drum, we have notes falling 1 and the "e" of 1 and on 3 and the ''e" of 3. Last but not least, our hi-hat is keeping a quarter note pulse on 1, 2, 3, and 4. It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay! 🥁 For today's wake 'n break, I'm revisiting the batucada bell part from yesterday, but this morning I am applying it to the full drum set. Starting with the bell pattern, our first bell is falling on 1 and on the "e" and "a" of 4. The next bell is falling on the "and" of 1 and on 2. Our third bell is falling on the "and" of 2 and on 3. Finally, our last bell is falling on the "and" and "a" of 3. Moving on to the bass drum, we have notes falling on 1 and the "and" of 1, on the "and" of 2, on 3 and on the "a" of 3. Personally, I like leaving out the "a" of 3 on the bass drum (see the first two measures) but I didn't realize that until editing this video. Lol Now let's take a look at the snare drum. We have ghost notes falling on the "e's" and "a's" of 1, 2, 3, and on the "and" of 4. We also have a single accented note on 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are keeping a quarter note pulse on 1, 2, 3, and 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

A new week is upon us once again! :) Today's wake 'n break is a counterclockwise tom groove with our hi-hats being chicked on all of the downbeats. Looking at our bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "e" of 3, and on 4. Next, let's look at the floor tom, where we have notes on "1e&" and on the "a" of 3. Moving along to the high tom, we have notes falling on the "a" of 1, on 2 and the "e" of 2, and on the "and" of 4. Taking our snare drum next, we have a single note falling on the "and" of 2. Sorry for the horrible lighting (track lighting recently blew out) but today's post is a groove with what I refer to as a "heavy 1", meaning that there is a strong snare hit on the 1. The main focus of the groove is the bass drum echoing the snare drum. Taking our snare drum first, we have accented notes on 1 and 3, as well as ghost notes on the "e" and "and' of 1, and on the "e&a" of 3. Looking at our bass drum next, we have notes falling on the "a" of 1, on 2, and on "4e&a". Moving along to the bell of the ride cymbal, we have notes falling on 1 and on 3. Last but not least, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay, folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a four on the floor groove that utilizes a stick sliding technique to bend the pitch upwards on the high tom. Taking our bass drum first, we have our quarter note pulse on 1, 2, 3, and 4. Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes on "1 trip let', the "and" of 3 and then an opening on the "and" of 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have our backbeat falling on 2 and 4. Last but not least, our tom is falling on the "and' of 2 with our other stick moving sliding across the head of the drum to create the slight pitch bend upwards. It's still way-ay-ay-ay too early for me! 😴 Today's wake 'n break is a slightly swung cowbell groove (technically, I'm using a Pete Engelhart reco reco) that has a tinge of second line but would definitely not consider it to be traditional second line. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, and on 3 and the "and" of 3. Next, our hi-hats are providing the groove with a slight swing by being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". Moving along to the bell pattern, we have notes falling in unison with the bass drum with an additional note on 4. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on the "e" of 2 and on 4, and then ghost notes on the "e" and "and" of 1, the "a" of 2, and on the "a" of 4. Thank goodness it's Friday! :) After an insane day yesterday, I decided to relax by my pond today and record a short two bar pandeiro groove in 6/8. Taking our thumb first, we have notes falling on 1, the "and" of 4, and on 5 in both bars. Looking at the tips of our fingers next, we have notes falling on the "and" of 1 in both bars. Moving along to our slap, we have notes falling on the "and" of 2, on 4, and on 6 in the first bar. In the second bar, however, we are replacing the slap on the 6 with a finger roll. After having to jump through a million hoops to get this one up (thanks electronics!), today's wake 'n break is finally here. 😤 and it's a boom bap beat built around the traditional bongo bell pattern, and it also utilizes a broken splash cymbal on the snare drum for an added trash effect. It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay folks! 🥁Today's wake 'n break has what I refer to as a "pulled out" feel, meaning that the groove almost feels like it has the rug being pulled out from underneath it and to give it that effect, I'm utilizing a ruff that starts on the snare and resolves on the bass drum. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and 2. Next, our snare drum has ruffs on 1 and 2, and then notes on the "a" of 2, on "3 trip let", and an accented note on 4. A new week is upon us once again, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is taking a traditional samba reggae groove and turning it into a somewhat slow two bar note surfer beat for the drum set. Looking at our hi-hats first, we have a steady a steady slew of notes on "1&2&3&4&" in both bars with an open note on the 1 of the first bar. Moving along to the bass drum next, we have notes falling on 1, 3, and 4 in the first bar and then on 1 and on "3&4&" in the second bar. After my computer crapped out on me and the last of the lights in the drum room died, I've finally managed to get today's wake 'n break up. It's a pretty simple linear groove that is broken up between the bass, hi-hat, cowbell, and snare. Looking at the cowbell first, we have notes falling on "1e&", the "and" of 3, and on the "and" of 4. Taking the bass drum next, we have notes falling on the "a" of 1, on 3, and on 4. Moving along to the hi-hats, we have a chick on 2 and then a strike on the "e" of 2. It also uses a set of Peruvian nut shells on the drums and a Brazilian tamborim.
