Default What to do with old sticks instead of throwing them away.

I've just noticed recently how many unusable (chipped, split, totally worn down) sticks I've accumulated over the years (especially when I was in that punk band). Instead of just tossing them, I'm wondering if there's anything useful I can do with them. What do you do with yours?

I use them in the garden to support drippers and water sprays.

Wow, just wow. Must've missed that thread. No chance!

It has given me an idea for a percussion instrument though. glueing them all together to make a sort of washboard/guiro type thing? Or maybe one of those mat things you put hot pans on to protect tables?

I just keep them in a drawer and then don't know what to do with them.

For those that use them as tinder, do you not have any concern about burning and henceforth breathing in the toxic fumes from whatever finish is on the sticks?

I make perches for my wife's bird with them.

I tried making a bow drill with them, it doesn't work very well. It's either the coating or the stick hardness, they start to smoke but produce no embers.

I think most stick woods are too dense.

We have pretty soft woods in the region where I live. The stick drill goes through the pallet. Perhaps if I could get a harder wood for the pallet it might work. Not too worried about it thought. It was more of a curiosity as to whether or not it would work. I can do it with cedar fairly well.

A friend of mine makes “fancy ink pens” with them- that and deer antlers he has hit me up. Makes beautiful pens but, as you can imagine, not much call for them. I was thinking of making my casket out of drum sticks but decided to be cremated. I guess I could drill out pieces to makes chambers to hold some of my ashes for keep sakes? Art in an ash hole. Wonder how much ash I would make? Got to have some ball park to determine number of sticks, size of piece, size of ash hole, how many milligrams of ash.

How about throwing them into the audience, or signing them and giving them to fans, at your shows?

Went see Psychostick some years ago with a pile of friends. One of them caught a stick. In the spirit of good fun, we all signed it and gave it back to the drummer!

Maybe grind them up into sawdust and reconstitute them , like Weyerhauser made that cruddy particle board and McDonald's reconstitutes chicken into those perfect little nuggets, into drum sticks. If that don't work we can widdle them down into shish kabob sticks, or tooth picks?

With a little glue and imagination you can make cool things (like the snare mentioned - one is shown at https://rebrn.com/re/had-a-lot-of-br...t-them-701442/ ) or do art work with them (google 'drumsick art'). Ive also seen things like hanging lamps.

or keep them in a big box ;-)
