My Blaemire/Ludwig project

I thought I would post a pic of a Blaemire snare that Jerry recently finished. The downbeat was just finished as a tribute to Allen Blaemire, as it is his favorite size snare. Mr. Blaemire has recently been weighing heavily on Jerry's mind as he has been in failing health recently. He's 81, has Parkinson's disease and now has contracted Pneumonia, and is down to 136 pounds, from 170. Hopefully he can recover.

Amazing resto job!
I love it when guys resurrect old and sometimes forgotten kits into fully functioning and gorgeous works of art!

Fabulous work!

Here's a cool pic from a Cinco de Mayo gig I did. We did an hour set of Santana material, and these Blaemires really did shine. This kit is such a pleasure to play.

Just a little update. About a month ago I decided to purchase the 8" shell, which noone had spoken for. Last week I finally got it all put together and played a gig yesterday with 8,10, 12 up top. It's nice to have options.
Edit: I forgot, I also picked up a little 12x20 Blaemire bass drum from Jerry. This will work great on small gigs and rehearsals.

Sweet kit. The history behind the kit makes it seem just a little sweeter, it takes me back a few years.

Thanks for shareing both the pics and the history.

A little update:
I wrapped the 12x20 bass drum to match. I haven't painted the hoops white yet, I may just leave them green. Also, I've been doing some Santana-type gigs, so I asked Jerry if he had any shell cut-offs laying around for a timbale. I took all the hardware off a DW piccolo tom and created a Blaemire timbale. Also, there is a possibility of me picking up a 15x22 bass drum in the very near future. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Another update:

Well, I didn't get the 15x22 bass drum that I was hoping for, but............
I scored a 14x24 Blaemire bass drum! I stripped off the champagne sparkle wrap, filled the clubdate lug holes, wrapped it in white, and now own a cannon of a bass drum! Not only that, but I also acquired a 12x15 Blaemire shell which I'm going to make into a floor tom.
So, that makes 7x 8, 8x10, 8.5x12, 9x13 hanging toms, 12x15 and 16x16 floor toms, 12x20 and 14x24 bass drums, and 3x12 timbale, all Blaemire shells. Whew!

Mendozart you are a very very lucky man with some gorgeous drums there, made all the more special by the history attached.

I'm seething with jealousy

Hey Munch,
I do agree that I am very lucky. I can't help but pinch myself every once in a while, to make sure I'm not dreaming. These drums have been a pleasure, and an honor, to play.

Thanks for the compliments. And yes, live life to the fullest.

Great work! That bass drum must be a cannon!

Cannon is an understatement. I first put a SKII on it, but I knew it was the wrong head for this kick. Finally got an EMAD on it, and can you say.....Bonhamesque?!

It's been a while since I checked into Blaemire drums, but I have a complete Blaemire kit that Al made for me in the mid-70s. I had them originally set up double-headed with Ludwig hardware, which was weird for a Blaemire kit in those days. Most guys built them single-headed with uncovered shells like Hal Blaine's. My kit is 15x22, 7x10, 8x12, 9x13, 15x16, which I usually paired with a rare 1950's WFL mahogany 6 1/2" snare. We all thought irregular sizes sounded better than say a 16x16, which is why the shell sizes are so unorthodox. The loudest, purest sounding black "Ludwig" kit ever made. Killer.

I played sessions and toured with them for years, played baseball stadiums in the rain, in 100-degree heat, in studios and clubs around the world, and they sounded exactly the same no matter where you played. I had three other kits are the same time and used them only if I needed something for a specific gig. Most of the time it was Blaemire all the way--they kept me well fed and amused or a number of years.

Not playing much these days, but thanks for the memory jog--glad people out there recognize just what a treasure those drums are. Your project looks great--the white version of my kit. I'll post a pic of them sometime.

Sounds like a great kit dellis! I would have to agree with you on the point that this kit has sounded great everywhere I've played it. Please do post a pic, I'm always interested in seeing some Blaemires.
