Default How much for an acrolite?!?

Went down to PMT in Birmingham yesterday for some heads and as always you have a bit of a browse and came across the snares (cue the rant). Are there really people that gullible in the world that would part with that much cash considering you can get one for under £100 very easily?

https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/ludwig-a...l-chrome-hoops

The 14x6.5 was £580. The hammered acrolite was in there, that looked awful. The supras were around £700

Underneath these snares was a Craviotto 2nd Hand Reserve Ash going for £700 which was well worth the money and if I was getting a snare that would have been a bargain.

If anyone would pay £500+ for a new acrolite I have a 60s prototype complete with aluminium lugs and hoops. The hoops are totally useless for rimshots and the shell is crudely welded at the seam. I'll consider swapping for a Radioking!

A fairly unscientific quick look at the completed listings on eBay shows that a used Acrolite here in the UK will sell for about £200 give or take. In the states the price is closer to £100.
All this talk of Ludwig snares is having an effect on me, maybe I'll look for a US seller who's offering very reasonable international postage!

That's what I've done in the past. Even with shipping and customs you're quids in.

I guess I've been lucky the guy who used to run our local drum store toured the states a few times and used to get Acros and Supras dirt cheap and bring them back. The drummer from Neds Atomic Dustbin sold all his gear off in the same shop. I have his 402.

I wonder if Premier stuff is ridiculously expensive in the states?

I'd be amazed if you could buy them at all. I've been here for 15 years and don't think I've seen a single kit.

Premier stuff is competitively priced here in the US. Although I don't see them much any more in shops. (Not sure if the current lineup is sold here).

Supply and demand.

The Acrolite was basically government-issued to drum students here in the US for approximately a decade. You'll find their remnants in garages, attics, closets, etc. You can find them at Goodwill for $75 if you keep an eye out.

The 'new' Acrolite isn't really an Acrolite at all. Acrolites were made to be cheap watered-down bare-bones versions of the Supra. The new Acrolite, with it's hammering and full 6.5" size, is a dressed up present-day Ludwig-phonic....an homage rather than a reproduction.

I swear, next time I go to the UK, I'm going to bring as many Acro's as the airline will permit.

Where do you guys see Acro’s (not blackro’s) for 75-125 dollar???

I do ocasionally random searches over the globe for 5,5 models and these all seem to fetch 300 - 400 euro (extreme’s above and under sparsely).

-edit-

With acro I mean the good ol LM-404

... along with TRICK and AXIS pedals.

I wouldn't pay more than $50 US for an ACROLITE.

shopgoodwill.com

The only downside is that they often overcharge for shipping. Just go and type "drum" into the search field. Regular Acros will pop up every week.

Examples:

Blackro currently at $70
LM-300 currently at $23
Premiere Steel MIE currently at $7
Another BW badge LM300 currently $70
Ludwig Standard Aluminum currently $47

None of them, they aren't currently manufacturing kits.

I'm not sure if Premier are still distributing new drums at the moment. They still make drums, not sure where the Leicester factory has gone. Not even sure where you'd buy them in the UK.

You can get a nice 70s Premier Elite for £500ish, I saw a purple Kenny Clare Elite going for £300 in mint condition and let it pass. The early 70s stuff was African mahogany. Only downside is the slot tuning rods.

Something I mentioned just the other day in another thread, the Leicester factory on Blaby Road, Wigston was very recently demolished and a supermarket is being built on its site. One of the reasons why any renaissance of the Premier name that might happen in the future won’t mean a thing to me.

Looking in Reverbs sold history they can be found, but mostly the black ones for that price:
https://reverb.com/marketplace?query...ce%7Casc&page=

As a side note. Buying in the US is mostly not profitable anymore (unless its indeed 70 or 100 bucks) because of the high shipping prices, tax and import fees that goes over the total price.

Ah...I wasn't sure what was up with Premier these days. I saw their website is still up, so I figured they were still making drums on some level.

You're making the "Acrolite" mistake. Anyone that knows that they have an "Acrolite" knows that they can get $200 for it.

You need to search for "Remo Snare", or "Weather Master Drum". Another one is "Rockers Snare" since many of the grey Acrolites shipped with Ludwig Rockers batter heads. You want to buy the drum that someone finds in Uncle Dave's closet after his second stroke, has no idea what it is, and wants to be rid of.

It's similar to how "Symbols" are often far cheaper than "Cymbals".

... or even LUDWIG snare drum.

I scored an 80's SS BLACK BEAUTY off of Craig's a couple years ago, everything on it original, simple oxidation, $220.00

When I saw it and asked the seller if that's the lowest they'd go. I got:

"I looked it up online, they're expensive drums."
