Favorite Conceptual Albums

I was chatting in another thread and it got me thinking about conceptual albums. I know of a few, and it seems to be a lost art. I know there are many great ones I am missing out on. So I will start with my list and would love to see others add in.

In no particular Order:

1. Ping Floyd:
  • Wish You Were Here
  • Dark Side Of The Moon
  • Animals
  • The Wall

2. Jethro Tull, Aqualung
3. Rush, 2112
4. Dream Theater, Scenes From A Memory
5. Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell (hey at least I admit it)

Ok I got it started and I know there are many missing. Please chime in.

Pat Metheny- The Way Up

John Coltrane- A Love Supreme

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Marillion - Misplaced Childhood

Marillion - Clucthing at Straws

Phish- The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday
Phish- Rift
Genesis- The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
The Who- Tommy
The Who- Quadrophenia
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme

I was never into the whole "album rock" thing but I sure love all the songs on these albums.

Not favorites but concept albums, nonetheless:

The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper
Brian Wilson, Smile
Lou Reed, Metal Machine Music
Flaming Lips, Zaireeka
NoFX, The Decline

Is saints of L.A. by motley Crue a concept album?

"Enlightenment" by McCoy Tyner. Recorded live at the Montreux jazz festival, with Alphonse Mouzin tearing it up.

Oh and Jesus Christ Superstar. I know it's a full on Musical, but hey...

Yes yes yes yes!!!! Check the avatar. The soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar may well be my favorite album period. Hopefully this doesn't start one of those debates about religion...

Coheed and Cambria:
  • The Second Stage Turbine Blade
  • In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
  • Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
  • Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow

All very good conceptual albums in my view. The first two albums were the best in my opinion although the last two have also been good

Yeah man! I used to (and should bring it back) be blasting Jesus Christ Superstar at my apartment and would call friends randomly - the ones I knew wouldn't pick up the phone (either because they were at work or whatever) and would jump in where ever the album was and leave a message of me singing along (and always rocking - that's the one album I can sing EVERYTHING well - that and Sam Cooke's greatest hits) My friends would call back "That was AWESOME"

I can play half of the musical on the piano - Heaven On Their Minds is a great one to pull out in front of "the ladies"

Oooohhhhhhh - "The Ladies"

I was just listening to it in the car today,

Snow Spock's Beard (It's what you get when you put JCS, The Lamb, Quadrophenia, Tommy, and The Wall in a blender.)

also
Porcupine Tree Deadwing
Radiohead OK Computer
Dream Theater Metropolis:Scenes from a Memory
RTF Romantic Warrior

and second those mentioned esp. 70's Tull, JCS and Moodies and In Search of the Lost Chord.

I still like prog . . . it's good stuff.

Saviour Machine - Saviour Machine
Saviour Machine - Saviour Machine 2
Saviour Machine - Legend I
Saviour Machine - Legend II
Saviour Machine - Legend III:I

Saviour Machine - Legend III:II (Still to come...)

And Scenes of a Memory from DT
