What is this thing? =)

That would be a wallet. Old trick to deaden the snare.

The more money in the wallet, the deader the snare will sound, lol.

Wonderful old studio trick. Leather wallets only though. I got a great low snare sound on my last recording by tuning it down nice and low then muffling it with my wallet.

I have mentioned many times on this forum the use of dish towels or tea towels, wallets, business cards etc. for dampening snare drums. I guess the young folks won't use anything that doesn't say MoonGel on the box.

I used a damp napkin at a gig once. When it started drying out I just wiped my sweaty forehead with it. All of my drum mentors are older guys (as it should be) so I know just about all your 70's studio trickerry..

Now on that note I've tried to muffle with business cards before because I read about it here (I think either you or Bermuda mentioned it) but I just couldn't get it to work.

How do you muffle with a business card???
