Sonor Opinions

I've been a long time sonor player and fanatic (20 years) and have pretty much played esxclusivey sonor for quite some time. I regularly post at the sonormuseum and just joined this forum recently. There's been a bit of griping going on about some of the newer offerings from sonor, so I figured I'd pop in here to see what other people's opinions about Sonor are. Like I said, I'm a fanatic, and really haven't been interested in any other drums except maybe a brady, and some of the late 80's early 90's tama and Yamaha stuff.

So how does the rest of the drumming world feel about Sonor and how it compares to other brands?

I think they're amazingly well engineered products that sound great! With that said, I wish the exchange rate to the USA was better because they're so expensive. I was looking at a set of Delites hard last year, but my budget didn't permit them. I have to agree with another member here when he said some of there finishes look like "frog puke". Just my 2 cents.

Sonor....nuff said.

The best drums going in my opinion, for the money, however the finish options do suck!!!!!
I'm saving for a delite set so I should be able to get it in 20 or so years!!!!! DAMMIT!!!!!

I think Sonor is one of a few companies (along with Pearl, Mapex and (FINALLY!) PDP) who really "get it" where lower priced lines are concerned. I looked at the Force 3007 series specs on the website and just about fell out of my chair over how much they have to offer at a pretty reasonable price. Even Pearl hasn't got around to making an 18" bass drum for the Vision line yet! Five lug 8" toms, nice finishes, simple but effective tom mounts and all of the sizes I would ever need to build any kind of kit on earth.

I'm giving PDP first crack at my new setup, but if I end up not liking it, Sonor is next on my list.

I absolutely LOVE Sonor..... I personally think they are the BEST hi end kit on the market...With that being said i do think they are WAY OVER PRICED...I mean the SQ2'S are amazing and the Delite's are AWESOME...But when you compare Mapex Saturns to the Delite's or Classixs i think that's where the Sonor issues begin.... You CANNOT touch new Sonor's for what you can get Saturns for.. Mapex make AMAZING drums at the right price i only wish Sonor would understand that philosphy... A lot of people freak out when they find out that Mapex are made in china and automatically think " CRAP ".......WRONG ANSWER.....I was also a Sonor geek for over 20 years....That changed when i played and bought my Saturns... Thin shells walnut over maple.... Forget about it..... DONE DEAL.....

Sonor has been an object of lust since the 80's for me. Sonor is synonymous with perfection. Nowadays, that's more the "Lexus of drums" than "The rolls of drums." The heavy SQ2 are breathtaking in every sense. I don't think that ply drums get any better than these. The walnut root SQ2 is quite the eyegasm.

I love Sonor. I have several Sonor drums. I love the artist series, the designer and delites. Great drums!

Heya PCASTag!

Good to see you here.
My thoughts are that Sonor seem to be pandering a little to the current trends of cheap/sellout gear, which doesnt thrill me, but they are still an amazing company and I fully understand why it needs to be done.

I still love my Designer kit!

I think that Sonor are absolutely great drums...but the bucks OUCH! One day I may own them!

Hence the reason my stance on Sonor is relegated to lust. The Sonors that I really like run over 6 grand for a 5-pc shellpack.

Gotcha on that one...they truly are great...GREAT drum porn to say the least...I too have the HUGE LUST. ROFL!

Sonor makes some very high end eye and ear candy.
I love my birch kit, it has the nicest tone i've ever heard, and i've owned many high end kits.

The price is way out there...

From what I've seen, at least with the Force series, their cheap gear still has it over most of the others out there.

All this can be found on the sonormuseum.

Back in the late 70's for example:
Ludwig was making crappy hardware, they used rivits to hold the wrap on, Rogers and slingerland were going out of business.

Companies were struggling with quality and outsourcing parts to Asia.

Pearl was still not that well regarded, yamaha was working on it as well. Premier struggled with variable quality, and eventually multiple ownership changes. Gretsch was all but done. Quality just wasn't common.

The whole time, sonor was producing flawless wrapped or exotic wood finish drums. They had solid hardware that worked. And they made every single part in-house. The engineering was top notch. Sonor never faulted or compromised. It's still true now.

Hi,
I really wonder if it has ever been made a Sonor rosewood shell.
Do you know something about this?

Thank you!
