R L L R L R R L...is called an "Inverted Paradiddle", or an "Inside Paradiddle" as we used to say back in the day..The '"diddle" is in the "middle".
I have an exercise in "Hands, Grooves, & Fills" using this sticking...
R R L R L L R L is not a paradiddle at all..just a different sticking combination.
See ya..
OH snap!!!!
How is RLLR LRRL the "main" inversion? 'Cause it's next in Stick Control after the "proper" p-did? (let's grab some Sean Combs' lingo in this thread - the more nicknames for a para-diddle the better!)
Just to throw something else in this thread - when you're playing you're inversions of the P-dubs, try or make-sure that you accent the first note of the inversion - gives you more command of the Pizzle-Dizzles as a whole. So after you are comfortable *leading* with the accented note - go back to playing an actual P-D[!] and putting those accents anywhere you want.
Sometimes I'll play those sweet little pa-dangle-bangles for hours at a time and try to come up with more and more ways to challenge myself. If you don't...what's the point to the para-diddle-hizzle, yo?
Single RLRR LRLL
Double RLRLRR LRLRLL
Triple RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL
Flam a diddles, Just flam them etc
Parra diddle-diddle RLRRLL LRLLRR
If you move the accent - the sticking is still the same - let's call it a "dizzle with some production" - and not that Mariah Carey return album - I'm talkin' the Al Green comeback production - with ?estlove.
Technically, they are all NOT Paradiddles..They are INVERSIONS of the Paradiddle sticking.
The main inversion is R LL R L RR L
RR L R LL R L is next in line. A "permutation" if you wish...
Just to be clear..Some rudiments do have some inversion/variations at times..BUT if you vary or change the sticking, it is not called by it's original name.
Hope that clears it up.
Cool, Caddy
The sticking is the same, as you stated..and of course starting a paradiddle on the 'and", or as 1/4 note triplets are still paradiddles.
My thing is, inversions "feel" and are "phrased" a bit different when I play them. Thats my 2 cents. They don't "feel" like standard paradiddle phrasing.
diddle on..
