Default I can play them drums but I canít dance

What is up with that?

I can play all kinds of grooves all day long, but for the life of me, I canít even begin to dance well at all.

Oh, I can move body parts around, but they donít seem to match the music.

Drumming feels natural. Dancing feels awkward. So I avoid getting on the dance floor because I feel I look truly dorkish.

Many folks have have assumed, as I do myself, it should be natural correlation for a drummer to dance 💃.

Is there any kind of connection between dancing and drumming?

Youíre not alone! Iím a total dork if you put me on a dance floor.

Funny thing though, Iím up for a new gig at work (I think it has something to do with a famous rodentsí 90th Birthday), and I submitted what they wanted to see, then when I got the confirmation email of where to go for our first meeting, I was told to bring my tap shoes.

Oh no.

Same here. I look like a retarded fish out of water if I try to dance. And honestly, I just don't get it. I watch people on the dance floor shaking their collective money makers, and I don't see how any one of them doesn't feel silly doing it. It just seems silly to me.

Whenever I tell someone that I can't dance and they know I'm a drummer, they look at me like I have four heads. Then they tell me I should be really good at it, to which I reply it is my job to make people dance, not do the dancing.

I - sadly - recognise myself in that post ! I really feel out of place on a dance floor :-D

I'm sure my dancing would qualify as cruel and unusual punishment under the Geneva Convention.

That being said my youngest daughter insisted on us doing a Father/Daughter dance at her wedding last month. She did a great job choreographing
15 dance moves into a 1 minute 40 second segment only using two songs: Nat King Cole's Unforgettable and RUSH's Tom Sawyer.

Both of my daughters are exceptional dancers. I asked their dance instructor what separates a professional dancer from all the other levels of dancers.
She said, "That's easy. A professional dancer knows exactly what to do with his/her hands."

Freddie Gruber said essentially the same thing to Neil Peart that playing drums is like a dance, but that the dance is happening with the hands.

To be fair, I'm sure our timing is fine, just not very elegant. Poised. Aesthetic.

You know how some drummers are captivating to watch and listen to even when they play simple lines? That smooth animal grace? As though their limbs are dancing on the drum kit?

Nerds who are too in their heads to bring out that animal grace on the dance floor also tend to be pretty average to watch at work on the kit too.

So all of my dancing is done at home alone, like a shameful secret ... come to think of it, so is my drumming since retirement, but I thankfully don't record my dancing and inflict it on the public :)

The best drummers are tap dancers it seems. Ever seen Steve Gadd tap?

Don't sell yourself short Bo. You're a total dork all the time.

Low hanging fruit, I know. I'm unable to resist those kinds of opportunities, it's no reflection on you.

Honestly, I think nearly all dudes look dorky when dancing to "high energy" dance style music. Majority of us just don't have that same sexual energy or pose that a beautiful lady has to assist. Sure, there's plenty of exceptions... But a lot of the popular dance - hip-shaking, booty swinging, flowy-movement stuff just fits better with the female persuasion to my eye. Even the suave dudes out on the floor barely seem to move much. More like rocking back and forth.

If you get me drunk enough, I'll go move around like an idiot, but I won't have any illusions about looking good.

Well in the 70s wasn't much to dancing, least for me, till disco hit then people started getting more serious, country dancers always been serious (have fond memories of "tobacco season" when tobacco warehouses would have square dancing and what not). My parents weren't "country" but were boogie woogie, jitterbugging, swinging dancers and man I was always in awe. My wife and I haven't danced in years till my eldest daughter married and the freakin' daddy-daughter dance. We started dance lessons-man that was fun. This lovely young lady was so patient and "finally" got my wife and I back on the dance floor. We were planning to continue after the wedding but life got busy and back to no dancing. Like anything practice makes perfect.

I remember that as well, it made Neil change his footwear which you can see on many of the newer show (R40), as Freddie pointed out that one must dance on the pedals as well. Steve Smith also uses custom dance shoes - an engineer friend who recorded him recently filled me in on that - he actually has a special case for his shoes!

As for me, nah, no one should should see me dance, not even me - you'd need to apply copious amounts of Sriracha sauce to the eyes afterwards!

Me either. Also don't wear my hair in a bun, wear "mens" lingerie or paint my nails.

I can (and have) played and recorded probably 20 different instruments, played hundreds of shows with a half dozen or so bands and groups...

...but I can't act in a play or drama.

Maybe over thinking it? Just relax and let your body move with the music. We all have rhythm, just sway or rock to the beat. Everyone can dance!

Here comes the supernatural anaesthetist.
If he wants you to snuff it,
All he has to do is puff it
He's such a fine dancer.

I wish they'd make up their minds.

In general, I've noticed that many (if not most) drummers are not the best dancers - myself included (although until I'm told otherwise I think I'm a pretty good dancer :). My theory is that most non-drummers just dance to the main groove and back beat while drummers "hear" all the little things in between which tends to make them seem to dance in a more awkward fashion.

I can't dance either. Back in the 80's I switched places with our lead singer for a novelty song that we did. I can't sing either. Anyway, my wife said the funniest thing in the world, was watching me try to sing and dance. I have held a woman close and walked around the dance floor. Does that count?

If you're playing Country that's a best case scenario. With nothing on but the radio.
