Using Zoom H2 or similar recorder

Anyone here have experience using a Zoom H2 or similar hand-held digital recorder? If so, any tips on placement and mixing?

I haven't experimented much but with my H2, but in front and close seems to be better than in front and far away. I'm wondering if overhead placement to mimic the Recorderman 2 mic technique might work decently as well.

In tips in mixing drums with just 1 stereo pair?

I've had very good results with placing the overhead mic about six feet above and one feet behind the drum throne and pointing it at the center of the bass drum's batter head.

Just two be clear, the Zoom H2 has two stereo pair options at 90-degrees or 120-degrees.

That makes sense for me though, bass drum would be panned center that way.
