Hey All,

I don't know anything about mics/sound boards/recording equip etc.. and I'm looking to set up some mics that will record what I play to my computer. I have a 7 peice kit with 15 cymbals. Can anyone point me in the right direction?? what equipment do I need/software etc. (around 1000-1500 budget) Thanks

Need:

1. Computer (dual core at 2.2GHZ per core, at least 4GB DDR3 RAM).
2. Software...there's some free stuff out there (Audacity, Reaper), but anticipate $300-400 for a decent software package.
3. Interface. I use a TASCAM US-1641 (it has 8x XLR with preamps, and 6x line-ins for 14x inputs for mics). Also some good other brands out there as well...$300-600
4. Mics (check out kits from Audix, Shure, Sennheiser). You can spend anywhere from $300-2000 on mics. Personally, there are some good quality cheap mics out there from CAD. I used those for a while until I bought some Sennheisers. You can upgrade mics one at a time by always keepign an eye open for deals (used, Craigslist, ebay, etc).

Many others will probably chime in on this thread, but wanted to drop a line on some basics.

Also, do not forget to figure in the cost of cables, stands, mic clips...those are what come up to bite you when you don't budget them in!
