Triggering off mesh heads

Hi everybody, I'm new to this forum. I have a teaching studio with 2 kits set up both equipped with mesh heads. I find this to be a superb practice and teaching set-up, as the playing sensation is very good, and as well as the obvious advantages of low volume, it is easy to play along to music and hear everything that's happening both with the music and the playing.

I'd like at times to be able to trigger "real" sounds, especially for beginners, so they get an idea of what the drums would actually sound like. Beginners really want to hear the big sound of a kit (of course), but I have to be able to control that volume-wise (neighbours/wife etc).

My question is what would people recommend as triggers? I have a Zoom RT-123 Rhythmtrak drum machine. Could this be used as a sound source? I know the obvious solution is to buy an electric kit, but I'm happy with my 2 real acoustic kits as they are (real drum sizes and feel).

Cheers.
