Band Meet and Greet

When and where did the meet and greet start? We've all seen footage of rock stars dashing into limos and being miles from the venue bf the crowd even stops cheering, but when (and if possible with who) did this meet and greet ritual start in the music world?

Religious meet and greets probably pre date musical performance variants. Is there an act, artist, or group that can be credited with ushering the meet and greet into popularity?

Meet and greets have taken on a life of their own, there's rules, some meet and greets are now monetized .

Not sure. I'd suspect meet and greets go way back to the big band days, but I can't prove it.

Monetizing meet and greets is largely a fall out of napster/internet/downloading. Bands don't make money selling albums, so they supplement their income with creative ways.
