Phase shift effect with drums

I heard Itchygoo Park (sp?) by the Small Faces on the radio this morning and it reminded me that I've always wondered how phase shifting is done with drums? Unlike a guitar where the entire signal is sent through the effect, this doesn't happen with a drum or cymbal, yet there doesn't seem to be any bleed through of "none effected" sound. Hope that sense. When the whole kit uses the effect, it's easy enough to figure out, but for example on Journey's first album with Ansley Dunbar, when they were prog rock, they had a song and I forget the name of it, where only the cymbals were phased shifted. How would you do this live, and I saw them play the song live with the same effect? Back in the 70's, Hot Dot's, made contact mics for cymbals, so I could see the effect being used with these, but they haven't been available for years. How would you do it now without using electronic drums or cymbals?
