Default A new project

I've been a happy camper for the last couple of days. All during the year with the show choir kids, I've been playing alongside a wonderful guitar player, who is a real player. He's currently the guitar player for Ambrosia (yeah, they still tour) and he told me he couldn't believe it when Michael McDonald called him to play in his band for a few gigs around town. He had a couple of offers to do stuff with Don Felder (yeah, the Eagle's Don Felder) but actually had to turn him down due to prior commitments.

So this guy actually wants to do stuff with me in a trio format. We had lunch the other day and discussed what we'd be doing and of course, it's all about fun, and if gig's come our way, then we'll go there. He has a bass player lined up, and he was mostly concerned that we'd all get along first, and be able to play second. Which was very cool - I've been in too many situations where the money is good enough that I'd put up with anything. Well, we're not talking about money.

Rehearsals will commence at my house at the top of September and I just received my first email from him and the bass player about what songs they want to play and sing, and I have to respond with my list of five that I want to do. I have a feeling I'll be the most eclectic of the trio. I think the concept is to be the 'alternative' cover band. We don't want to do songs that everybody is playing to death, because we've already done that throughout our lives up to now. But they're all songs everybody would know they've heard and remember at some point.

His list was interesting, he had some Steely Dan in there, and some Seals & Crofts (remember those guys?). The bass player wants to do some Marshall Crenshaw and Gerry Rafferty tunes. I look at my list and figure since I have guys that can play it, I'm considering The Police's Murder by Numbers for the first time in my life, Joe Jackson, Hall & Oates, Squeeze....all songs I've never done before but love. So I'm excited. I plan to record all the rehearsals and I'll keep ya' updated. But it's nice to be part of a project again, and this time around with really good players.

It'll be nice to be able to showcase the new Pearl kit on a gig where I actually show my face and sing again. It's been a while!

Maybe I'll add "Come and get your love" by Redbone to my list......

Very exciting Bo. I need a new avenue too (working on that). Nothing better than working with players, especially in a trio setting, who can deliver without issues. I'm looking forward to the output :)

Bo, that sounds as if it's going to be a whole lot of fun! (And I've even heard of some of the bands you mention - yes, really!)

What you need now is a sparkly frock.

Ouch! Did you award the 1 star?

A cover band can be very musically innovating, as well as entertaining for the audience & gratifying for the players. Original music creation is great, it's absolutely what I'd prefer to do, but it doesn't mean I look down on cover bands, & cover bands aren't all the same deal either.

That's great Bo. I really like the fact that getting along was priority number 1. That makes playing much more fun. Hope you guys have a blast and I like the idea of the "alternative" cover band, sounds like fun.

Not exactly haha I think it's pretty cool he's working with high leveled musicians who are also in contact with even higher up musicians. Just not a fan of cover bands

Considering who he's been playing with, I'm honored. I guess my "show choir fury" playing made an impression ;)

Or maybe he figures being an anonymous rodent impersonator is no way to live.

This comes as no surprise to me. You're one of the cats, a real player and musician. Good musicians are going to want to play with you. Sounds like a fun gig. Enjoy and keep us posted!

Lol yea he took pity on you. Yea, no. I am assuming that he could have asked any number of capable drummers..

I'm loving the song choices. Ambitious material. The reason cover bands get such a bad rap is that most musicians are hacks. They chose the lowest common denominator for a set list and then do it no justice. Clever material, aptly played by deft and talented musicians is always fun to watch. You've got the right attitude too. Have fun and make great music and let good things happen. Can I get an amen for some Supertramp?!?

Yeah, he's prepared with the 12-string for "Give a little bit" - we laughed at how you can only do things in the style of Contemporary Christian music with a 12-string ;)

No. His name is Doug Jackson and he's the current guitarist for Ambrosia. He's a great vocalist but I don't think he's handling any lead vocals with Ambrosia, when I saw them the bass player fronted most of the hits, anyway.

I guess the history of Ambrosia is kinda' like Styx - the original lead guy who wrote most of the music imploded and he was ousted by the band. So I think Doug came in as a sideman at first, and his arrival may have been well after everything had settled down.

Good for you Bo, when the focus is on getting along the music always seems to "get along"...should be a load of fun!

Congrats and don't be surprised he asked, obviously knows a good musician when he hears one.
