Could someone please explain what my band is doing here?

That's actually pretty interesting...

The way I counted it was....

I counted it in 8/8. So, if the rest of your song is in 4/4 (which it is), in 8/8, every eighth note would count as 1 beat. So instead of counting 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, in 8/8 you'd count, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.

Now, if, during that part you noted, you count in 8/8 like this, you would find that your band's pattern does something that is called going over the bar line. In essence, the pattern doesnt repeat every 1 bar, like most all music. Instead, it resolves every 2 bars. So, after the first bar, your pattern is repeated, but instead of it started on the 1 of the next bar, it starts on the and of 1. This creates some interesting tension, but then it is released once you resolve it after the 2nd bar.

I'm not sure if this makes total sense, as it's actually a pretty complicated concept, and to do it naturally is pretty rare.
