Default Have you ever cried during a live performance?

I have never cried (outwardly) during a live performance.

I also mean while performing live. Bad wording on my part.

Yes, many times, as part of an audience when the feel and vibes of a performance reach these magical and emotional moments, but not while playing a live gig. :)

I cried twice on this forum reading some "live performance" on 2 threads... :)

I know, I'm a softy....

Not that I remember, but my nose has run a few times in winter outdoor gigs- does that count?

Can't remember specifics but I know I have. I'm sure I would cry just looking at some of Van Gogh's work in person but I'm veering off topic again.
I'm a pretty emotional person.

I HATE YOU, drumfreak. LOL Aw, I truly wish I could have been there. You know he only sold one painting when he was alive?

Don McLean's masterpiece about him is timeless itself.

I've cried many times as an audience member, for some reason listening to music really gets the tears flowing, I cry all the time when I'm listening to songs I love, I don't really think much of it.

I've played a few gigs where I felt like crying. But not in the "the music is moving me" way.

I can't believe this thread is here. I cried for the first time while playing just 5 days ago. The bassist in my band, a 24 YO female bassist, she's a total joy to play with....just moved to Nashville yesterday. We had 4 back to back gigs last week, Thursday through Sunday. Saturday night, the leader, who is so close to the bassist that they are like family, chose this song...called "That's How Strong My Love Is" a slow 12/8 number, and I just could not keep it together. It also happened during "Knocking on Heavens Door" when the 2 of them were harmonizing so sweetly...I never really realized how much she meant to me until then.
Tears were running down my face. I'm such a loser...

So true! I couldn`t have said it better myself!
I have cried cried once as a member of the audience but i`ve been many times close to "i`m gonna cry" state, both as a member of audience and player. It also happens when I listen to music that`s really groovy and melodic, especially violin works.

Also, not sure if i`m the only one experiencing this: sometimes, in certain parts of certain songs, i have this inner nuclear power plant that gives me power and joy and makes me wanna play the groove or the fill much much faster. Is it only me?

Not since I was very young and there was a movie theme that used to really move me. Telstar used to affect me too.

Maybe I have issues? It doesn't feel like it (not those ones anyway). I just think more than I emote :)

Never as a performer (because I've never been gigging, and thinking about it, even never being a spectator. Although I was close to crying/in a very emotional state the few times I saw Andy McKee live (acoustic guitarist = one-man percussion band).

I do cry sometimes when I'm listening to music at home. Which overall is a rare occasion, not too much music is grabbing me so intensely to make me cry. I can say that my original music can have that effect, too, but I have to be in a certain mood for it. (BTW, I'm proud to state that I never cried to anything by Steve Vai - although I like him as a guitarist/musician, but to my own music sometimes, haha.)

Last time I cried listening to a song it was a tune by Loreena McKennitt ("Caravanserai"), that song grabbed me every listening round.

I'm never ashamed in such situations - well if quality/deeply emotional music touches my body and triggers physical reactions then so be it, I'm fine with that - but honestly prefer being alone then. Haven't discussed this phenomenon with others a lot but a friend of mine (being the other half of my main recording project - gothic metal) shares the same view, and sometimes (depending on the mood) our stuff can grab him and make him cry, too.

True confessions...This wasn't live, it was radio! I went for a short hike early one morning and was trying to sort out issues that had no answers. When I got back to the car, this song was playing which turned into major waterworks. The beauty of the song, to me, caught me off guard and brought out stuffed emotions that a simple walk couldn't.

Sorry bro I missed that. Yes, her voice, the song. My people come from Ireland and that song just hit me at so many levels. Loreena is so beautiful and talented. If you like redheads.... :)

edit: This song still brings on the tears. That venue is amazing. Is that in Spain?

Indeed. I was playing a pub gig in a small open garden out the back without mikes. I was having to play fairly aggressively to make the kit heard. At the end of one particular song I went for a big double crash and missed with my right hand, smacking my knuckles on the edge of my 12" rack Tom.... ...I was crying for about a week. ;p

I'm grateful to be able to feel music to a level that I break down sometimes.

I gotta admit, Susan Boyle's appearance on BGT got me. Nothing was expected from her and when the audience got behind her amazing performance, it was amazing.

Never during, but close when our singer at a simple wedding showed up even though he had lost his sister that morning. He broke down during the last line of "Wonderful World", and the rest of us nearly did. Very sad night.

I think as musicians, we feel music more than many folks. Like our antenna is up a little higher, or our ears are a little bigger.

This song always stirs me, and yes sometimes to a few tears. The performance simply hits so hard. It takes you from an easy meditative piano and guitar to Clare Torry singing what feels like the last notes of a life.

Almost on stage.

I did a side band with some friends. The singer wanted to do a Christian Death cover as a tribute to Christian Death's deceased singer Rozz Williams. So he choose a rather sad an emotional charged song, and we worked out our own version of it.

The song featured both a male vocal part, and a female vocal part, which was performed by the bands keyboardist.

So we're playing a club, and playing this song, and Gitane Demone walks in, who was the female singer and keyboardist on the original recording that we are covering. As we're playing, she works her way up to the front of the stage, and she just starts crying her eyes out. Another guy who played guitar in Christian Death (although no on this particular record) comes over to hold her up. We're playing this emotional charged song, written and recorded by a guy who is now deceased, in front of the members of the band that originally recorded the song, and people are just breaking out in tears, and it was hard to not cry in empathy (although I can't say I knew the deceased singer myself, although I had sort of met him once, but I did know the other band members in the audience).

Fortunately, I did hold it together, which was good, because I was playing to a sequencer with a click in my ear, and had I gotten off the click, that would have been a real disaster.

This begs an interesting question re: the effect of emotional accessibility on our drumming.

…but how to get at the effects without just guessing….

Would be interesting to get some popular drummers opinions on their emotional accessibility while playing…with some objective measure like frequency of crying during playing…but I would never expect honesty in such a competitive cut throat business.

I bet the effect is a bit more complex than we might assume…I bet players react differently…and in the end, it will depend on what your ‘normal’ is in relation to your current state.

Wonder if we would see a parallel between the axis of...
low emotion ---> high emotion
...and...
consistancy ---> creativity

I read that there were times that the other members would sometimes cry backstage when Christine would do this song.
Wow, what a band of lunatics Fleetwood Mac were.

I admit I did once weep briefly during a gig, not sure anyone noticed, wasn't like I burst into huge melodramatic weeping or anything, lol. Just reached a point during a song, and something just happened, I was aware of being totally, spiritually, locked into the other band members and it was deep and meaningful for a while. There, said it.

I do respond to music emotionally as an audience member, the last time I really found it hard not to sit there blubbing was in 1993 Brain May at Brixton academy ( check out youtube ) Freddie was recently dead, the place was full of Queen fans, he sang Love of My Life and 2000 people ( including Brian May ) wept, wooah that was emotional.
