Default mystery gear in Kings Of Leon's drummer's setup on TV

During the pregame for the Final Four broadcast on CBS, KOL performed outdoors somewhere in Houston, and they showed one song. There was a strange plexiglass looking thing mounted above the bass drum, up near one of the crashes, sort of in front of the drummer. Looked about a foot & a half wide by maybe 8 in. tall. I couldn't get a good enough view to make out what its purpose was. Tried finding footage on the net but couldn't. Did anyone see it? (Or can anyone find a photo?)

Replying to bump this thread because it's made me curious and I want to know now. I never saw it, but what you're describing sounds interesting. I'll look into it.

I'm guessing it's a sound shield for that microphone

cymbal microphone isolator? this would be my best guess or it could aways be the famous flux cupassitor?

It's next to a cymbal, it's perhaps to grasp the sound and bounce it to the mic before it floats into the ether.

Maybe it's some sort of piezo transducer thing. I have never seen one before.

That's my guess as well, especially since it looks like that mic up top appears to have something covering that side of the mic, too.

That one cymbal must be really loud.

Here's a couple pics so we don't have to keep going to the Flickr page.

I have no clue what that thing is.

I will say that we play exactly the same kit configuration, though! Except that my crashes area wee bit smaller (18, 19, 20, instead of his, idk, all 20s?), and I don't have a splash or a cowbell. Other than that...

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about... guess it's wider than I realized. When I spotted it, the camera POV was more to the left.

What, exactly, is the shield, uh, shielding the cymbal FROM? The singer's ears? And why would only the one cymbal need it?

I guess I need to be directing these questions to the drummer or their mgmt. if I really wanna know...

That's why I wondered if it was actually something for capturing the cymbal sound rather than just reflecting it. No cables going away from it though so it can't be. Very mysterious.

...possibly to shield that particular cymbal from the singer. Looks to be placed directly between them. Maybe he really smacks the crap out of that cymbal.

I've seen these before, it's simply to stop his huge crash cymbal from bleeding into the singers mic. It's a really great solution rather than using a full shield. Anyone who tours/gigs regularly would understand the problem of having such loud cymbals and the way they often bleed into the singers mic, sometimes overpowering the vocal.

Makes me wonder how the other crash doesn't cause the same problem.

I'd say it's because he crash rides the one that the shield is on. A la use somebody.

agreed, I'm sure this is his go to crash/ride or as Sabian calls it wash ride I think ...we all have one right..I know I have one I use just for this and I posted something a few weeks ago about it being too loud and bleeding into the vocal mics..this looks like the answer to that thread I started..

Makes sense, I guess, that it's not that it's louder than the others, but that it's the one that he beats the bejeezus out of for extended periods of time rather than for the occasional accent.

Wonder how Zep, D. Purple, The Who, etc. got around this "problem"...?

I've seen a drummer in Australia use them.

It makes a lot of sense to me. I do a lot of touring and tv performances etc. and it's a very common problem, especially for a tv mix. I believe he uses a 24" crash and paistes tend to be quite bright and cutting also. Normally on a big stage it wouldn't be too much of an issue. I have a similar problem with my 22" paiste twenty light ride and my 20" twenty light ride, both of which I use for wash (crash) riding.

Im wondering about his crash ride sound. Is that a 24" paiste giant beat to his right? True, on their video Pyro he plays zildjian avedis. Maybe he just changed his endorsement.

Given my experience that sound shield is used to dampen the bleed into the singers mic. They probably didn't want a big gay full shield in front of te drums but that little shield can help a ton when the drummer is riding that crash on the heavy parts.
