Default Bongos or Cajon... or Bongo Cajon?

So i have been putting together my Christmas list and I have been thinking about asking for some sort of hand percussion instrument to learn. I have always been curious about the Cajon, which is apparently a real popular instrument now (or maybe thats what Guitar Center wants you to think :D), but at my school i have been introduced to the Bongos while in Jazz Band. I am split in my decision and i don't know which instrument to choose because both look really fun to play. Then i come across the bongo cajon ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USmXv...eature=related ) and i think it is neat too. Can you guys help me decide? All of these look so fun!

And if i was to go for a Cajon, i would like one that sounds as much as a snare and bass drum as possible, because i noticed that some of them have variations in sound. Does anyone have any suggestions for Cajon or Bongo choices? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have bongos, cajons, congas, djembes, dunduns, bugarabus, doumbeks, tars, bendirs, riq, kanjira, etc. and they all these are fun to play. If I had to choose between a cajon and bongos, then I would play the cajon. You can play the cajon with brushes too for an interesting layer of percussion. Plus you can sit on the cajon if you gig. I have a Schlagwerk CP 432 "deluxe" Makassar Cajon and a Fat Conga String Cajon. Both are awesome.

Bongos - buy used on eBay but get a pro quality. It should cost about the same as a top of the line cajon. If you buy top quality, these drums can last you a life time with a bit of TLC. Check out the following link for additional background reading:

I hope Santa brings you something percussive for Christmas!

Or- you could keep acquiring the different types of cajons and combine them into a full drumset?? See enclosed. Thanks

For sure Migaluch,

If you're looking for a bongo Cajon check out Kopf's selection. they sound pretty awesome. http://www.x8drums.com/Kopf-Hybrid-S...jon-p/hscs.htm Here's a pic

But just know that you're not really going to get the deep sound as much and usually forget about snares. If you're looking for a Cajon, I'd recommend (mainly just cuz I'm a fan) the new DavisOne cajon. http://www.davisdrum.com/davis-one It's sounds amazing, at about the cheapest price for its quality. There's great snappy snares with side slaps and a deep bass. Here's a pic I found from davisdrum's site. I'm not saying you have to get that one, there's lots of good cajons on the market. Almost any cajon in the $300 - $500 price point is going to sound good. And if you're feeling insane, go ahead and buy a $900 one.

So if you have 2 Cajons you'd have a pair of Cajones right? jk

I've played a few but still not my cup of tea but I can see the practical applications for a Cajon. I've seent them used quite effectively in coffeehouses, acoustic worship services, etc. Then some not so effective applications like amped electric bass, electric guitar, amped acoustic all drowning out the poor drummer forced to sit on and use a cheap $100 GC cajon, which funny enough, wasn't miced. Poor guy couldn't even keep his arse on the thing.

I'm a drummer/woodworker/cabinet maker who builds seriously heavy duty cajons that cover the frequency range of bongos, congas, have a big sustaining bass and and sensitivity to respond to hand and finger technique unlike most cajons. Please check out the youtube channel "mediumsizedog", use headphones or good speakers and let me know what you think. My aim is to get as many noises as I can out of a box you sit on and find people who agree that cajons should keep evolving.
