I like the sound of the ten, but I can easily do without this Tom, it's, let say, an extra voice, very interesting. But I don't like much having it right in front of me for instance, it's too high and I have the feeling its too close to the pitch of the snare for me.

I find the 10 fights the snare too often.
The sympathetic buzz is too profound and difficult to eradicate without compromising the specialness of the 10.

I'll add that a cranked up 12" for bop can occupy a sonic space with a timbre that is absolutely delightful (ala Bill Stewart). Unfortunately, I don't get to play much bop these days so it's not typically a sound I'm going for.

Changing tastes are a sign of a healthy musical mind, imho. ( Check out Abe Laboriel Jr.'s 12" tom sound )

With my new kit I have 8, 10, 12, and 15 FT. Most standard rock songs I fill on the 12 and 15. I use the 8 and 10 like Timbales or bongos in the case of Feelin Alright. I also use the 8 and 10 when I want a broader sonic range in a fill. I also mic my drums in most cases for tonal purposes more than volume. I know what you guys are saying about sustain etc. But in my opinion some songs we cover just need more sound and I don't think any of the people we play for would notice the difference between 10-12 and 12-13 save for other drummers. My new set is also much lighter than my 10, 12, 13, 16, 22. I like that. And I have short arms so things are a little closer too.

I hear you about the buzz, sometimes it is too much.

Delightful, that's what I'm going for. After my gig tomorrow, I hope I will like it as much as I anticipate. I'll let you guys know how it went.

Trump, check. FPC lol. Healthy musical mind? Wouldn't we all like to think we have a healthy musical mind. Is it true? I could easily delude myself into thinking so.

I've often played without using an 8" or 10" tom but, whenever I did, I always missed that high voice on the kit.
