More Ludwig Signet porn

I *am* hoping to get both size kicks. I did not realize they *do* have an 8" a la carte.... hrmmm.

I'm not complaining, I just made the point that in some of the gigs I play, I need a less noticeable, more wallpaper-like finish. I normally tend towards dark finishes; the Ludwigs I have were gifted to me and I might not have chosen that finish by myself. As it is, I love them.

And I think the Alpine Blue is classy, honestly. I don't dislike it at all, I just already have a kit that kind of color.

I also wanted something elegant/classy but with a bit of flash so I pimped out my Macassar Ebony kit with wood hoops.

I think the signet kits would move faster if they offered different finishes. The stripey finish puts off a lot of people.

Now, THAT looks good. What a great idea. Do you hear much of a difference in sound?

GeeDeeEmm

I do hear a difference but not quite sure how to describe it ... I would say a bit more open, more vibey, seems to bring out the tone of the shell more. I'm not doing a good job of articulating but I like what the wood hoops do for these drums.

Maybe out of line, but it's a Signet. Not exactly drum porn. It's a put it together yourself kit that has 12-16 pinball sized holes in every shell. I mean I know it's not (insert evil brand) bad but sheeesh. You guys are acting like it's a (insert site approved hero status drum brand).

Reminds me of Stix but with DW instead of Mapex.

Why do Bo's drums make you so sour Sundog? Do you feel invalidated by how little love your beloved DWs get? I'm not mocking you, I'm seriously asking.

Maybe the term "drum porn" is a little overreaching but ol' Matt is proud of his new kit and he wanted to show it off with his forum friends.

Agreed. It's not a high-end kit.

Not really. Most dealers end up assembling the kit so the buyer doesn't do any work. However, what this minimalist assembly method unintentionally (I think) gives you is very light hardware and no lug gaskets which I like.

What they are is NA Maple drums with Ludwig mojo at an import price. If you're a Ludwig fan this is one of the better deals to be had in a long time.

I think the crux of the comment is that the big holes take more away from the shell than the rubber grommet does. Regardless, they still sounded fantastic to me.

I disagree with others that they sound anything like a CM though.

Sour Puss!

Just joking, SunDog. I think most of the guys here are like me - I love drums of all brands and styles. I even get excited when somebody else gets a new kit and is proud to show it off. I don't care if it costs $600 or $6000 - and yes, I've owned both extremes. Drums are cool, period.

I don't feel invalidated, and my kit doesn't get "little love", it gets no love....but only here. Out in the real world, we both know, things are quite a bit different, and this forum is really just a small part of my life. Just a very warped sense of reality going down here a lot of the time. The fact that I never feel validated here either, I think says just as much. I'm still not buying a PDP M5 and calling it "porn" though. Matt's a big boy, he's got broad shoulders (figurative) and an awful lot of nice drums, he can handle it. Anyone that puts up that many "look what I got" posts can take a little ribbing.

Oh I need new glasses, I though I was in for some midget porn.

Sunbog, there's still hope, you just need to work at it. You should make a few threads about your dw's every few days, and don't bother with that "your place" forum, put them in general/drums where more ppl can see them. When people stop paying attention to them, buy another set, then make several threads about those, repeat.

Haaah!! Delightful Dre. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that. From what I gather, the "Drums" section was only for a company that had made a kit. If you bought the kit and want to show it off then that should go in the "My Gear" section.

Whenever I post pics of my gear on the correct section they seem to get little, if any attention and that bugs me.

Mods?

What ribbing? I figure I'm on a drum forum, so I share my drums. This isn't that unlike Andy showing us new Guru drums from time-to-time. Heck, if I wasn't talking about my gear, or any gear, what would the point of being on this forum be? We can talk technique, we can talk attitudes about professionalism, but I'd say 90% of the time we talk about gear, since that's a tangible. Discussing practice techniques or how to read is cool, but there's really no way to gauge that into a discussion.

I just wanted to point out that I'm excited about this little kit. And since I own both classic maples and these, I can make the direct comparisons, and I do think they sound very close to my CM's. I'm set to put them into a live situation with other musicians next week so we'll see how they fare through that. But if it's a condensed version of my big CM's, there's probably nothing to worry about.

And I never made the argument that this is a high-end kit, well, that's not true. I sorta did because I'm saying it's sounding very much like my "pro" cm's. It's not super-expensive or dreamy, but if it gets the job done, that's what I'm all for at this point. I have high-end drums and just wanted to point out the fact that a lower-priced alternative is a very cool idea.

On the "DW not getting any love here", I think that's false. I think there's a lot of us here who just question the pricing. DW is like tickets to Disneyland. The price keeps going up but people keep buying them anyway. Perhaps that's the dilemma here? We should be asking why people keep buying them? People keep asking that about that at my work. And the corporation is sorta' saying "Well, the price has to go up because too many people want the product". DW is probably faced with the same thing. The drums must be flying off all the store shelves faster than they can keep up with demand, so naturally the price continues to rise? Anyway, I still like DW pedals and just started using them again, and my throne of the last 15 years is a DW throne.

What I'd really like to find is some old Camcos. Those are the DW drums I like. And I've always liked the big turret lug.

I'd vote for bigger holes vs. rubber grommets any day. Rubber kills the lighter construction drum.

Ever since Bermuda's first introduction of the Signet, I've been a fan of the concept. Ok, there's bits that could be done better, & opinions on finishes are exactly that, but as a means of delivering a lighter mass kit at sensible money, this is a winner to me.

...here you go: an original 1960s "oaklawn" camco kit just listed by steve...

Beautiful! But I'd like them with the turret lugs - I must be the only guy that really likes that big turret lug. But if I went with a new kit, Dunnett's Geo. Way drums I saw at NAMM were pretty incredible and (from what I could hear in that loud hall) sounded really warm having been made with mahogany. The Geo.Way kit would be what I consider "New Vintage".

I totally dig those Signets. I don't know why the finish isn't getting love. I think it's killer.

If I saw those for 600 I'd snap them up in a second. Great sizes too.

I am curious about long term durability of the snap in holes, but my hunch is that they will fair just fine.

What amazes me most about the Geo. Way kits is that they possess that same swank that us Gretsch guys eat-up. It's not just vintage, it's retro-nouveau. Like looking at a 1950's concept drawing of a flying car.

I was ready to max-out a credit card when I saw them at NAMM. I'm glad Greg there didn't get me a price. Although I think the set was already sold anyway. Whew!
