Could this work?

My 1940s-style band has been booked for a gig in aid of the Air Cadets later in the year. Our closing number is the Ray Noble song "Goodnight, Sweetheart". This morning, as I was feeding the cats, I thought about segueing "We'll Meet Again" into "Goodnight, Sweetheart", and then I took a step further: how about overlaying the two choruses?

Would that work? I'm not very (at all) melodic.

Hi Magenta, I reckon that would work. I've played both tunes for dancing and they could go together, maybe at foxtrot tempo?

Thanks - and I agree with you about the tempo.

I've tried singing one song while listening to the other, and I just got myself all confused (it's easily done). I think I'll leave it to the specialists to sort out. It would be great if it did work, though - cracking good way to end our set :)

They both work well with a nice reggae lilt to them ;)

Do not even mention this to my other band! They'd probably bloody do it. Only it would have to be without me.

The only song I know called "Goodnight Sweetheart" is in 12/8 time, as sung by Sha-Na-Na: "Goodnight sweetheart, well its time to go (Do-do-do-do-dom)"

That version wouldn't fit with "We'll Meet Again" which is a straight 4/4

Also, "We'll Meet Again has an unusual second chord (augmented?) which might clash if sung over another song.

Maybe there's another song called "Goodnight Sweetheart" in 4/4? If so, they might fit perfectly together. But not the version I know.

That's the Goodnight Sweetheart I was thinking of. If superimposing the two is problematic why not go for a segue?

I don't have any suggestions Magenta but I do love the fact you are in a 40s style band-that is just awesome. Love music from all eras-some great music overlooked. My Mom played piano and she played all eras and genres of music all the time-I actually thought she wrote many of the tunes (she was a song writer too) as a child till I grew up and discovered otherwise.

It's such a beautiful song, isn't it? Yeah, we'll just do the segue if we have to, but I the overlaying - if it worked - would be the nearest I've ever come to a stroke of genius :)

I completely agree with you, GetA. Your mum sounds very talented, and how lovely that you grew up with such beautiful music in your own home.

I stumbled across this band by chance, answering a FB advert, and they've turned out to be some of the nicest, funniest and, frankly, naughtiest people I've ever met. Excitingly, we're going shopping for WWll-type uniforms soon, for the Air Cadets gig. Less excitingly, I doubt whether I'll be able to play my drums in a WAAF skirt, so I shall probably end up being the grease-monkey in overalls and a headscarf. It'll be a challenge to glam that up, but I'm sure I'll manage.

That's a different version of 'Goodnight Sweetheart' to the one I was thinking of. Fairly compatible with 'We'll meet again'.

I think that the 'Goodnight' melody would fit over the 'We'll meet" backing better than the other way around, so I'd try Goodnight first, Meet Again 2nd, then put the Goodnight melody over the top of Meet Again to finish. Should make a nostalgic ending to the show.

This music reminds me of growing up watching Dad's Army...

Melting those together should absolutely work! Yes, the structure is a little different, but tempo & form should slide together seamlessly :)

I hope you're right! Band practice tomorrow night.

That's a good idea, thank you :)

Funnily enough we're thinking of putting the Dad's Army theme song in the set too.

Not to hijack your thread but this reminds of a gig with "War Bonds" I did a few years back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXOzm8GHq2o I really enjoyed their show-he would read old real letters from the war and anecdotal stories. He had injured his leg on a bike and was using a cane-we told him he should keep it as part of the act.

Oh that was really good - or perhaps I should say, simply wizard! Right up my street, and then some!

Update: we couldn't get it to work, although to be fair we only had one singer there last night. I played "Goodnight Sweetheart" on the piahno, as we had the music for that, and the vocalist sang "We'll Meet Again". I haven't quite given up on it.

On the plus side, we've decided on the final medley. "There'll Be Bluebirds", followed by "We'll Meet Again", followed by "Goodnight Sweetheart". If that doesn't bring a tear to the audiences eyes, they'll be one hard-hearted bunch.
