Is the quality still the same?
I'm considering getting a new Stage Custom Birch kit, but am hesitant since they shipped their operation to China and am curious if I should look at other companies.
I talked with a Yamaha rep last week and I for one am not worried about the quality after our conversation. The Chinese plant is supposedly top notch with highly trained employees. I saw a Hybrid Maple and a Stage Custom up close and it's beautiful stuff. Sounded great. I would buy one. Not worried a bit.
Always looknat other companies, but not for that reason. Is the quality still the same?

Same here. I've seen/touched/played brand new Hybrid Maple and Stage Custom kits just last week....up close and checked them over thoroughly. Fit and finish was excellent. Yes, even on the Stage Customs. These were the drums for Dave Weckl's 30th anniversary tour, I bet the same thing drumdevil saw for the Montreal tour stop. Buy without hesitation.

Indeed the same. Although Dave could make garbage cans sound good, those little Stage Customs (bop kit) sounded really great. He had them fitted with coated Ambassadors, even on the bass drum with no muffling. Again, I would buy them in a heartbeat if I wanted or needed another kit.
Is there any video of Weckl playing the bebop new Stage Customs? I'd love to hear those drums in that setup.

Taking video was not allowed so I doubt it. I can't find any official footage.
No Weckl on STAGE CUSTOM, but he's a little dribble of Tommy Igoe playing STAGE CUSTOM 2014 Trademark YAMAHA sound, blindfold test it'd be hard to tell them apart from MCA's IMO.
I've owned an MIJ Oak Custom set, an MIJ Club Custom set, and an MIC Live Custom set and they are all great quality. Some differences (like bass drum claws), but equally great quality.

Hi - new to the forum. I've seen your videos and read a few threads about the kits you own - nice and informative - thanks. I've played a yamaha tour custom w/ a noble and cooley snare for about 25+ years and have added a RC rack tom (it is only a 4 piece kit) at some point along the way.
I'm looking to "treat" myself and get a "new" kit. I'm going to keep the ones I have as well. I've kind of narrowed it down to a used oak custom vs a new live custom. The couple of oaks I've seen are either honey amber or red sedona (both six pieces , which would allow me to mix and match for gigs - 22, 10, 12, 14, 16). The live that I prefer would be in the amber shadow sunburst - and I would probably start with a smaller set up and add on (I do like the 22x14 kick option). Price isn't a huge issue, but the used oaks would be more drums at a lower price. I know you did a nice comparison with the club vs live. Since you've owned both, I would love to hear your thoughts. How do they compare - how hey differ in depth (I like the deeper oak custom toms, but prefer the shallower live custom bass), look, feel, etc.?
I play in a couple bands - soul, funk and 60's cover as well as a roots/blues/Americana original band.
thanks for your time,
Mike

Hey Mike, thanks!!! I had coated Vintage Ambassadors on the Oak Custom kit I owned for a little while and never tried those heads on the Live Custom. So that probably makes a difference -- not sure how big or small.
I used the Oak Customs with 10", 12", and 16" toms and 17"x22" bass drum live with those heads and it sounded absolutely ridiculous. I had a Powerstroke 3 on the bass drum with an Evans EQ3 pillow against the batter head and it was probably the best live tone I've ever had. How much was the room, the heads, etc...? I have no idea.
I love the Live Custom too, but haven't had that exact experience with it yet and I've used it alot more. I was close at the last gig with coated Vintage Emperors on it. I've tried several types of heads on the Live Custom kit, but those sound the best.
I no loner have the Oak Custom kit, so I can't compare them side-by-side. But it SEEMS like the Live Custom needed the Vintage Emperors to get the same deep tone the Oak Customs got with the Vintage Ambassadors. I guess that really doesn't say much. LOL
Sorry, I'm rambling now...
No prob, I am happy to hear some rambling - especially if it helps me make a decision
How do you like the shallower toms on the Lives compared to deeper ones on other sets?
Used Oak vs a new Live...?
