Different company pads to brain

Hi. Please forgive my ignorance, I've only been playing for 16 months.
I'm wondering if you can use pads from one company, with the module/brain of another. I currently have a Session Pro DD505, and although this has served me well, I feel that the module just isn't up to scratch anymore. I plan on slowly upgrading this kit as time goes on and I'm happy with the pads, just not the module. If I were to get say, a Roland module, would it be compatible with pads from other companies?

Generally, yes. But I would really replace those pads asap ...

Usually a single main zone - the head, will work.
But some pads also have one or two rim zones, and those can be less likely to work with different manufacturer's modules.

Tell you the truth, most good quality brains usually cost quite a bit close to what it'd cost you for a new set. Not really worth it in my opinion.
