Beautiful drum kit configurations

My set is usually 2 up and 1 down, but lately I have been going 1 up and 1 down. Less to tote. My ups are 12" & 13" and I have been going with the 12" with my 16" FT. I like the difference in sound.

One vote for one up, two down. The ride cymbal has to be over the kick for me, always has been that way. It really nails it home when you use a 24" ride.

I've really been enjoying the standard 5-piece kit I have with 2-up and 1-down. I've even gone more like the drum catalog and only use a single crash and a single ride. And no double pedals. I may use it as a 1-up 1-down kit someday, but not today!

I enjoy this one. Don't know what "school" it is. Don't care!

That's normal school!

Yeah, I've always preferred 2 up/1 down or even 3 up/1 down...

I beg to differ on your 3 up 1 down remark. A mullet is to hair is what a "1 up 2 down" is to drum kits. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! And please know that I'm joking. ;-)

Haha I knew I was gonna get flamed for that comment. The 3 up 1 down is a fairly popular alternative but i just feel all those toms above the bass drum makes it look a bit cluttered. I also do like the 1 up, 1 down...simple and classy.

Nice kit Fuz! I've always liked the 3 up/1 down. But, I also like 1 up / 2 down, 2 up / 2 down, 2 up / 1 down, etc, etc. ;-P

Agreed...like them all.

Ugly? Indeed. There is nothing better looking than my 3 up, 1 or two down Gretsch Renown in Cherry Burst. All of this sitting on my Pearl Icon rack. Anything less is just a toy. Man up. 8+)

Agreed. 3 up - 2 down is superior.

I used to play with 2 floor toms, but i would always get a kink in my neck (from sleeping, not playing) and found it hard (and annoying) to turn and play the last floor tom. So when i bought my latest kit, i went with 3 up one down. I find that i play better when my body is a little more still and not twisting.

It's the great thing about drums. Everyone is different, you can set up what you like and what suits you best and nobody can be wrong about it.

Personally I started 1 up 1 down, then moved to 2 up 1 down.

A little while ago I started experimenting with my toms hanging off the cymbal stands and I moved the 2up a little to the left to bring the ride closer and down to where I used to have it while playing 1 up 1 down.

Within the last month I went the whole hog- removed my bass drum mount- moved to 1 up and 2 down- and I think I've eventually found my nirvana! lol

Ride is in nice and close- 1 up tom off the cymbal stand at the perfect postion for me and the two floor toms just sitting nicely next to one another- waiting to be rolled on.

When you guys get older and more stiff....3 up 1 down is very helpful.

My set is 2 up, 1 dn,

but the high tom is on the other side of the floor time, a la Jojo Mayer at MD Fest,

so it's really 1 up 2 dn...right?

I really enjoy 1 up 1 down.

I like two up,or three up, offset to the left so I can get my ride where I like it,Two down I like the look of,but a 14 and 16 down is not natural for me,I always forget to use the 16.

The Cat,yes. Many years ago when I would play my first pearl kit after a few minutes I would smell cat piss,it took me awhile to figure that the cat was urinating in my bass drum and when the head would heat up It would stink to high heaven.I just thought it was sleeping in there. The deflated kitty now serves as a warning to others.
