I don't have much female artist songs in my collection, but I'm mostly an instrumental rock guy.

I love what Paula Cole does with her voice. She seems to have a good range and she uses varying tones and off-pitch stuff to great effect.

I love Allanah Miles' "Black Velvet" too but that's the only song of hers I know.

I'd love to find some velvet-y jazz singers, with husky, sexy smokiness, sort of like what Paula Cole does in "Feelin' Love". What a sexy song.

Have you heard Sigur Ros singing volenska? It focuses solely on the sound of language, no real lyrics

I can't stand female singers. Apart from Christina Scabbia.

I've got a good one for you... Angelica Vargas in Flames of Fury. Check her out...

Surprised no one has mentioned Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. One of my faves. Was always surprised they did not get bigger than they did.

When Annie Wilson from Heart sings "Alone", it sends shivers up my spine every time.
Google it and try and find a live accoustic version (I think in Chicago maybe?).

My new favorite is Carla Morrison. She sings in Spanish, but go take a listen to the song "Eres Tu." She's an angel.
