Excited about this thread.

Abe, I was just thinking of SB's Venus the other day and how Bananarama with that wretched Stock Aitken & Waterman team murdered a great tune.

I first heard the original on my first ever LP - 20 Dynamic Hits. Here's another old classic from that album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkqfpkTTy2w ... classic drummer choke right at the start :)

Hoo yeah JB, I always liked Genesis with Peter Gabriel best.

Ian, funny how in the B52s clip she bumps her mic at about 1:00 and has a little smirk to herself.

Here's some serious retro, complete with fabulous psychedelic set ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpizS9h-1Xk. Note the extended organ solo - in a hit song. Only in the 60s ...

Maiden circa 1980 prior to Bruce D. and Adrian S. joining - this track is a cover of the Skyhook's and never appeared on their albums; although it was released as a single with the controversial (for its time) picture of Margeret Thatcher in soldier's gear.

Thought I'd take this opportunity to feature bands from a tiny & mostly insignificant little rural town called Hereford. Population = 50,000. Mostly known for it's breed of cattle. Hardly competes with the music spawning giants like Liverpool & London, yet this unlikely location was the birthplace of these two acts;

This is an odd one. Though I love all kinds of music, this tune was from a band called Sneaker. It cracked the Top 40 in 1981 (?) for a few weeks but I recall it on the radio a lot and it was one of those early teen full of hormones kind of song that you couldn't resist. Loved the harmonies. The band was produced or founded or whatever I think by Steely Dan's Jeff Skunk Baxter. They went nowehere after this mild hit. Sappy but I liked it.

I wonder if any west coasters recall this tune. I think they were from California?? Anway enjoy (and don't hate me...)

I agree. Does anyone remember if Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash toured together in the early 70s? I saw Wishbone Ash but I can't remember who else was on the bill. Actually I can barely remember seeing WA. lol

Wishbone Ash. That brings back memories. Steve Upton was as good on drums as anyone going around in rock at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cZ26_2rJis

Trouble is, the band lacked personality so he slipped under the radar. I always thought this was their best song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn66BO2E3rk

Andy, Hereford has a helluva rock pedigree for a rural town! Pretenders and Mott the Hoope. I was a huge Ian Hunter fan - All American Alien Boy was a favourite.

You Nearly Did me In was a brilliant, brilliant track with an unbelievable lineup .... Jaco on bass, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, David Sanborn on soprano, and Queen on backup vocals! (plus some slick sessioners).

Then add his soulful, heartfelt vocals and lyrics ... music to give you the tingles. Enjoy ...

Yes, I love that song :)

In 1966, Johnny Hallyday did a french cover of this song, I liked the slightly different arrangements :)

Great stuff Pol, & you've got to love this performance from the Hereford boy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUUod...eature=related Actually, the intro from Bowie is rather insightful on touring in the UK at the time (ah, they were the good times, sigh). Not many realise that this song was first written by Bowie for Mott the Hoople. Only after it's chart success in the UK, did Bowie release it himself.

Enjoying this thread. Lots of good stuff.

Here's an oldie from Oz. It's dated, clunky at times, and it's great :)

A sobering thought ... it's hard to imagine a person in a wheelchair cutting through in today's climate.

Amazing performance by Tim Buckley here - as long as you're in the mood for weird tonalities, 5/4 with free time sections ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjdK-jUiOI4

During the 60's and 70's, almost every hit singles from America or England would have had a french cover by some french artists at the time, I discovered some of these songs from the french version, only to realise it was an original american or english recording in the first place, lol.

I'm not sure about the sideburns either :))
