Default Drum tuning!

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a Gretsch Catalina 26 kit. I'm looking for big drums because, in my eyes, I can tune the toms and bass quite high and tight and still get a good, bassy, tom sound.
Sizes:
13 x 9
16 x 16
18 x 16
26 x 16
Heads:
Toms and Bass Drum:
Coated Emperor over Coated Ambassador
Snare:
Same as toms but clear Ambassador
Please help! I'm looking for a low tone for the toms but I'm also looking for a good stick rebound. Will tuning the toms tightly give me this?
(Also, what is the difference between using a Coated Ambassador and a Clear Ambassador for the toms? Are the Clear Amb's more resonant?)

Default Re: Drum tuning!

Coated heads are described as 'warmer'. Emps will give a fatter sound than Ambassadors.
Your drums - good choice, but nobody can tell you exactly how to tune 'low, medium high etc.' from a computer keyboard. Best to just do it and use your own ear. Each drum has a 'sweet spot' as you go up in tuning range. Get resonant and batter in the same pitch, and the 'low' pitch you want, then experiment. Find each drums sweet spot.... its nirvana for your drum shells! Take the half-day to do it. There's no substitute fro experimentation to learn your drums, and to tune to what YOU want.
