Well, now the formalities are over...

My names Johnny and I'm a drummer by default. Ive been primarily a guitarist for about 18 years, played in numerous bands and gigged on and off for years. Back in my teens I started having a go at drumming mainly for a laugh, eventually buying myself a few old kits from pawn shops etc. I got kicked out of home at 16 and over the next few years sold all my stuff either to eat or to save moving stuff around. I once bought a sparkle Ludwig kit, late 60's/early 70's, for £600 in a local pawn shop.. only to sell it for about £400 a year on (I also gave up a 1966 Fender Jazzmaster for £400 on the same day and that was equally gutting). But, despite all the trappings of survival I still drummed whenever I stumbled upon a kit and on my legs at any oppourtunity.

Fast forward a few years and last Autumn the drummer in my band had to stop drumming due to a weird skin condition that means he comes up in massive 'boils' under his skin. So, the decision was made for me to stop the guitar and drum for the band (he's now on synths & keys).

Having had MASSIVE kits in the past I always fancied just stripping back and being more concerned with the groove of drumming so I started building my own small kit.

This is it:

I see you lot like it spec'd out so here you go...

Mapex 14x5 Maple snare (tuned TIGHT!)
Gretsch Catalina 22x18 kick drum (stock heads, tuned nice, 1 pillow lightly touching batter)
Tama Iron Cobra Jr double kick pedal
Tama Iron Cobra hi-hat stand

The cymbals are borrowed off the ex-drummer in my band until I source a set of my favourites. Those on there at the moment are Sabian AAX's (14 hats and 19 crash/ride).

I get a bonus through work in March which is when I'll be sorting a set of Istanbul Agop Sultan 14" Hats and a Sultan 20" ride.

It's a small setup but when I get the cymbals Ill be fine... you can get loads more sounds out of those Istanbuls than you can from the generic Sabians.

Anyways, thats my hello!

So I've already posted a couple of random questions on the site so I figured I'd officially introduce myself. I borrowed a format for the "about me" from another poster so here I go.

Origin of user name? I'm in a band called John The Conqueror so Johnny Conqueror seemed fitting

How did you start drumming? Playing on my drummers kit when I played bass :)

I've lurked on this website various times in the past but I finally stopped and actually decided to join up. I have not been dissapointed! It's an awesome community with a wealth of knowledge so I'm trying to learn all that I can! If any of you guys have the time look my band up on youtube "John The Conqueror" and let me know what you think. This isn't a plug or anything I promise, cause I doubt any of yall are in Philly but I'd really like to hear what you think. Thanks

How did you start drumming? I was a huge hair band fan in 7th grade. Best friend from school played guitar and drums appealed to me.

I'm new here to this forum and I hope to learn a lot. A little background....

I got my first drumset when I was 13 after saving my money for a long time. A 5-piece black set from Sears (that was "made by Gretsch"). Very soon after, I added an extra bass drum and started buying used cymbals (mostly Zildjian Bronze Scimitars). Although I did snag a Zildjian A 16" Medium Thin Crash that I still use to this day.

No lessons for me (which I still regret). I just learned to play along to songs and I played with musicians immediately. We played our first shows in 1994 at the age of 17 at a HUGE club. Then we split up as I pursued a hockey career and the other members joined the military. We played again for a few months in 2000 while they were on leave to record a home-recorded CD. I moved out of my family's home and into an apartment (getting ready to become a homeowner in a few months!) Then I didn't touch my drums again until 2007. Played a few shows again in late 2007, then split up again. Drums gathered dust in my singer's basement. Fast forward to now....

In January they called me to come over and "jam for old time's sake." To my dismay, my drums and cymbal stands were severely rusted due to moisture issues in his basement. After one jam, I decided I want to keep playing drums with or without this band. I just bought a new Tama Silverstar 6 pc and have been playing as much as possible. Trying to rid myself of bad habits, and eliminated the second bass drum to get back to basics. I still consider myself a rookie drummer but I'm learning....

How long have you been playing? Started bashing pots and pans when I was 5, sat behind a kit for the first time at 10, took it up seriously when I was about 13
Origin of user name? A nickname from an old girlfriend. Used it ever since.
Your top 5 drummers? Lars Ulrich (pre-2000s), Mike Portnoy, Dom Howard, Dave Grohl, Joey Jordison (all pretty obvious choices, I know)
Make of drumkit? My drum kit got stolen outside a gig and I've yet to replace it, but I did have a Pearl Export
Make of cymbal? Also stolen, but I mixed them around a fair bit. Had a Sabian AAX crash, Zildjian ZXT crash, Zildjian ZHT Ride and Meinl Soundcaster hats.
Where do you practice? Muthers Studios, Birmingham UK
Are you in a band? Sort of. Just me and a guitarist at the minute, still in the writing process.
Do you play covers or originals? Originals.
What style of music? Somewhere between hard rock, metal and a hint of prog
Favourite take out food? Pizza. With lots of meat on it
What country do you live in? England
One really odd fact about yourself? I have no sense of smell, haven't had one since birth.
How did you start drumming? Bashing pots and pans when I was a kid. Took it up more seriously after watching a Metallica live show on video and thought "I wanna be that guy!"

Thanks for reading!

Hi,

My name is Harm, but rest assured that i won't do you any, it is just a dutch name meaning soldier but that also does not apply to me.

I haven't really got a top five of drummers, but i do have some favorite drum breaks which make the people who played them my favorites i guess. I'll name three so you can get an impression, but they are in no way all of them.

1) Skull Snaps - It's a New Day
2) Melvin Bliss - Synthetic Substitution
3) Sly and the Family Stone - Sing a Simple Song

I heard these drums first listening to hip-hop as a teenager and back then i though the dj's made them, i was clueless.

At this point i don't practice at home, i sold my Roland TD4k because of the fact i cannot get used to the sound of e-drums and am waiting for my jazz-kit to arrive. Besides that i am in a stoner rock band and you can hear us play here and here or just check out our channel. All of our tracks are our own songs and recorded in one go.

I live in Holland like i stated earlier and one odd fact about myself is that i like to bite my thumb, probably ever since my mother forced me to quit sucking it.

I started drumming by coincidence really, a friend of mine needed a drummer for his band and that is how i started out.

Hi guys
My real name is Daniel, I'm from Argentina.
To make it short, drummers were always kind of special to me, ever since I heard my first beatle song, way back in 1970. Ringo Starr was my hero, specially because everybody picked on him, like if the other three guys were making him a favor by letting him play drums with them. So I felt sorry for Ringo and started to study why he did what he did and how he did it and started to make comparisons, friendly comparisons of course with other drummers: Bonham, Moon, Baker, Mitchell, Watts, etc. And that is why I'm here. To learn more, to share more and to have fun. And that's all. My best to you.

Default Andreas Losiewicz

Hello everyone!
I'm Andreas Losiewicz, 19 yrs old, from Norway.
I have been playing for 14 yrs. I play all kinds of styles and all kinds of percussion instruments. I love playing the drum set as much as the mallet instruments.
Today I'm playing in one of Norway's best wind bands.
I also play in a big band and a jazz band.

I practice for at least 3 hours everyday, and I like to advance myself in musicianship. If you can play a tricky rythm, it's fine, but you also have to create music out of it.
I love the groove-feeling and climax in tunes.

This is a little about me :-)

And remember, always make music out of drumming!

Default HI all - I'm Ken

This is me. Been lurking for a bit, posting occasionally. Been a member, moderator and owner of many forums over the years across all types of interests, from photography, to diving, to gardening, to home audio, automotive and drums.

Drummerworld is in a time of transition - but no different from any other forum. Early adopters long for the good ol' days, new comers ask questions that have been asked, there are acrimonious splits. leadership changes, etc. But the same Forum truths exist here as they do on any other vBulletin Forum: Content lives forever - choose your words carefully, and be yourself. Characters and content are what forums are about.

The forums are where all the real information is. I drive people to forums of their specific interest whenever they need to know anything from real people. This forum is loaded with super content and great tips - I really like it here.

More about me:

Real name? Ken

Age? 51

How long have you been playing? Pics of me with wood spoons on pots at age 1. Had sticks around forever. Matching band (Timpani) in HS. First kit was a used Tama Imperial Star I paid on for months and brought home April 27th, 1979. Been playing drums almost every day since.

Origin of user name? Been my user name on every forum since forums were called 'lists'

Your top 5 drummers?
Wow. Uh, Tony Brock, Roger Meadows Taylor, Neil, Mike Portnoy, Dennis Chambers

Make of drumkit? Main rig: 1996 Keller DW. Back up rigs too numerous to mention

Make of cymbal?
I use mostly Zildjian K Custom Darks. I have Sabian effects stuff, a few Wuhon China's.

Where do you practice? My home studio

Are you in a band?
Too many. I'm a collaborative artist. The phone rings, I go.

Do you play covers or originals? Yes.

What style of music? Prog, Rock, Pop, Metal, Gospel, CCM, Indy, Latin, Jazz... whatever. Its music. Who wants only one flavor on their plate?

Favourite take out food? Something healthy with lots of protein. I'm a gym rat.

What country do you live in? SoCal

One really odd fact about yourself? I've never had a drum lesson.

How did you start drumming?
I don't ever remember not drumming.

Anyway...love the site and all the good information I get here. Been awhile since I played and see that alot has changed! :)

Oh...here's my new kit...

This looks as good a place as any to get started, eh?

Real name? Mike H

Age? 34

How long have you been playing? Started playing music at 7 y/o. Started playing "drums" at 34 :D

Origin of user name? I read about a "ground pounder" bass fishing tournament in Japan where all of the participants fished from the shore because the boating license and fuel costs were so expensive. Since I also mostly fish from shore, I adopted the nickname.

Your top 5 drummers? Merely from a fan-of-music perspective: Benny Benjamin, Uriel Jones and "Pistol" Allen (I lump these 3 together as the "motown trio), Bill Ward, Dave Grohl, Igor Cavalera, and Neil Peart.

Make of drumkit? N/A

Make of cymbal? N/A

Where do you practice? Basement, in front of the comp.

Are you in a band? Not currently.

Do you play covers or originals? N/A

What style of music? From a fan perspective: Huge into metal, rock, R&B, and motown.

Favourite take out food? Oriental, mostly chinese

What country do you live in? Motown, USA

One really odd fact about yourself? My index fingers are about 3/4" shorter than my ring fingers, and if you've ever played a string instrument, you know that this is kind of a big deal :)

How did you start drumming? I've been a semi-mediocre guitarist and bassist for nearly 20 years. This year, just after my 34th birthday, I was walking through my local GC on a whim and saw the Tommy Igoe "Great Hands" video playing on the screen. I figured "What the heck, why not?", so I picked up a practice pad and some 5A's and started going to town!

Hello all, here is my info:

Real name? Francis
Age? 43
What country do you live in? USA (The Garden State)
How long have you been playing? Just a couple months, though I have loved drums since day one.
Origin of user name? As in a shortened form of Francesco.
Your top 5 drummers? Hmmm, maybe Stewart C, Terry B, Aynsley D, Neil P and Carl P....but lots more could easily swap into the list.
How did you start drumming? Started my 10-year-old son on lessons recently. This got my appetite going. As soon as a slot opened after his lesson, I grabbed it.

I have tinkered with guitar for many years, but I think drums may be a better fit for me.

Real name?- Steven Murry

Age?- 22

How long have you been playing?- 9 years

Origin of user name?- I chose it because percussion and drumming has always been a part of culture and always will be, and no matter how many innovations and new ideas appear, it always comes back to the same thing, how to express ourselves through rhythm, and it will always be that way. Percussion repeats itself over and over, recursively....and RecursivePercussive rhymes. I chose it mostly because it rhymes. :P

Your top 5 drummers?- Darren King, Dave Grohl, Buddy Rich, Joe Morello Meg White, haha!

Make of drumkit?- Yamaha DTX-500 module and TP65 triggers (live in an apartment)

Make of cymbal? - PCY65 Triggers :P

Where do you practice?- Computer room

Are you in a band? - Part of a rotation for church band. Would love to find another band to write originals with

Do you play covers or originals? - Covers, would love to branch to original though

What style of music? - Worship, Rock, Jazz, other random weird stuff

Favourite take out food? - Skyline Chili

What country do you live in? - USA

One really odd fact about yourself? - I have a nose like a bloodhound. I've always joked that it'll save my life one day.

How did you start drumming? - With sticks and a practice pad ;)

But seriously, started playing trombone in middle school band class and thought that the percussion section was having a lot more fun. So I promptly switched over and never looked back.

Make of drumkit - Tama Starclassic birch performer, Yamaha Stage Custom, Sonor Force 3007 on the way!

Where do you practice - In my basement or at a band member's house

Are you in a band - Yes, currently 2 bands

Do you play covers or originals - Mostly covers

What style of music - Classic/Southern rock, New rock

Favourite take out food - Pizza

What country do you live in - USA

One really odd fact about yourself - I'm a lot more OCD than I'd like to admit

How did you start drumming - Took drum lessons so I could go to band camp with my friends. Everything just grew from there. My best friend showed me Neil Peart on the "Exit Stage Left" video and I was hooked. Once I discovered Steve Smith, Dave Weckl and a larger world (I am from a small town), things really opened up for me. I've been constantly learning ever since. Glad to be here.

A lot of us around here are a bit OCD, but I am CDO.

You know what that is, don't you?

It is the same thing as OCD except the letters are in the PROPER ORDER AS THEY SHOULD BE!

Hello,
I' m Gérard, I live in France in west Paris suburb, I'm 66 years old, I' m a vintage drums fan; in 1968/1969 I studied drums at Dante AGOSTINI/Kenny CLARKE school ; it was a great honor to study with Kenny CLARKE, he was very kind with students; in 1969 I got an old GRETSCH set 13x9, 16x16, 22x14 black with little gold pieces rhodoid, later I knew it was an "Anniversary Sparkle" modele 1958/1959; in 1970 I bought an alto tom 12x8 black nitron rhodoid; many years later I had a great chance to find an "Anniversary Sparkl" snare 14x5,5: my set was completed !!!... So, I get a SLINGERLAND 12x8 "Silver Sparkl" rhodoid and a 1970 ROGERS set 13x9, 16x16, 22x14 3 "Black Oyster" rhodoid (same colour Ringo STARR Ludwig).
