Default kick specific drum head? or anything that fits?

I was about to order some new bass drum heads online, and I now I'm a bit confused. I'm looking at coated ambassadors and Fiberskyn ambassadors, but here's the rub: I can buy a 20" coated ambassador for around $25, OR a 20" coated ambassador bass drum head for around $38. Same goes for the Fiberskyn. The listing doesn't state a difference. Is there one?

Just to be clear, I know there's a difference between the Fiberskyn and regular coated, but what's different about the "bass drum" versions of these heads?

THANKS.

The difference lies in the metal hoop the head is crimped into. ON a bass drum, the metal hoop needs to be larger so the wooden bass drum hoop doesn't slip off of it. A tom head is designed to go into a hoop that holds it in place, there's no such thing when you're dealing with the wooden bass drum hoop. It's a size difference, this is why you pay more.

Some guys have had luck with 18" bass drums using 18" tom heads, but not always. And even then, over time, your bass drum hoop may expand a bit, causing it to slip.

Like Bo said, yes, there is a difference.

A bass drum needs a bass drum head.
