Default Thicker Resos

is there any benefit to having resonant heads that are thicker than the batter head ?

Yes there is, it allows you to mount your toms upside down n' play em' that way. Balances out the molecular structure of the toms, also evens out wear on the rims w/o having to take them off and rotate them.

Can't do this with the snare drum tho of course.

It would make perfect sense if you want to tune the reso head to a lower pitch than the batter head. Thicker heads naturally tend to tune to a lower pitch than thinner heads.

I used to run G1's (10 mil head) over G Pluses (12 mil head).

Some like the tone. I did for a while, but went back to 10 mil over 10 mil.
