Default tom sizes

so, i wanted to change my drum heads, but i am having a little trouble with the size, in the ''manual'' that came with the drums it says that the toms are 12, 13 and 16 inches, but wen i measure the heads is is 10,5, 12,5 and 14,5 inches

is that normal?

should i buy the 12,13,16 heads?

thx

If you're measuring outside of rim to outside of rim, you're probably getting that extra 1/2 inch there. The drum is measured by shell diameter without the rims. Get a 12/13/16 tom pack and keep the receipt if you have any doubts, but almost certainly (99.99999999994% probable) you'll be okay. 12/13/16 is still the most common tom configuration sold on the planet.

WHOOPS! BIG EDIT: Shows what happens when you scan a post instead of reading. Yes, Mike got it right: 10-12-14.

I agree with alparrott: sounds like you're measurments are including the hoop. Measure from the inside of the hoop where the head bends over the edge of the drum. There are no 1/2" increments in drum diameters. But it really sounds to me like you have a 10/12/14 setup, which is not at all uncommon. 12/13/16 configurations are also very common, but in this case, I'll wager that isn't what you have.

Best thing you can do is take your heads off and bring them with you to the drum store. There's no way you can go wrong doing that and you have to take them off anyway.

+1 to mikes answer.........because his measurements are smaller than 12, 13, 16 if he measured the hoop. Take the heads off and measure the bare wood side to side.
