Default Just Purchased My First Kit

Hello Fellas,

I've been wanting a drum set for a few years but now ever got around to it. Well today I purchased a used 5pc Tama Rockstar kit for $300. It's practically brand new. It didn't come with a bass pedal or seat so now I'm trying to determine what is the best double bass pedal for under $300. Can you guys give me some advice on which pedal would be best?

Thanks!!!

NOT a good idea to start with a double bass drum pedal. Spend a year or two learning the fundamentals of footwork with a single pedal before buying a double. It doesn't matter if you need a double pedal to play black death thrash metal-core; you won't be able to play anything unless you have a solid foundation to build from. Gotta walk before you run.

Aside from that - it looks like you scored a pretty good deal on the Tama. Rockstars are great starter/intermediate kit.

I love how folks are up for spending 300 on the whole kit, and then 300 on a set of double-pedals.

Spend about 100 on a good single pedal, then spend the extra 200 on cymbal upgrades. Way more important to the overall sound and groove.

Well I guess I should have said that I've been playing around my uncle's DW kit for years. What I meant is that this is my first kit. I just never had a kit of my own. I am still learning though. He uses a Pearl Eliminator Demon Drive Double Pedal. I like that pedal a lot but too expensive for me. I was thinking of trying out a Tama Iron Cobra Jr. The set came with a new Zildjian ZBT Crash, Ride & Hi Hats. I know they are not the best cymbals but I think there good enough for now.

Here's an entire sub-forum dedicated to nothin' but pedals: http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/f...splay.php?f=27

Put the kettle on, put your feet up and put your reading glasses on.

And then ... put your shoes on (unless you drum barefoot), go down to the drum shop, and try out as many pedals as you can. If you have any drummer buds, try out their pedals, also ...
The only way you're gonna know what feels good to you, is to physically play perspective pedals ...

I think you'll find you need cymbal upgrades first. Score some better cymbals off craigslist and ebay, then think about pedals. You may have noticed the initial revulsion to the "hey got my first kit, what double pedal do I need?" thing, it's a bit of a classic. I really think you're wasting your time there, unless your sole intention is to play a style that absolutely requires the double, and you must have it to get the gigs.

Great score on the mint cond Rockstar!. Nice work!.

I say, if you want a double pedal, get a double pedal. I had about as much experiance as you when I switched to double bass.

It blew my mind when I found that Musicians Friend is selling the Mapex Raptor doubles for only $270. They are killer pedals and I recommend them to anyone who likes direct drive doubles.

Yep. If there's one universal theme that's common to all those pedal threads, it's the voices of experience all sayin' "GET YER FEET ON 'EM!"

Me, I'm with Spreggy......I'd upgrade my cymbals first. But I'm not a dude with his first kit who just wants to smoke away on double pedals either. Try everything and have at it.

That said, it was a valid point made earlier. You do realise you're spending as much on pedals as you have on an entire bloody kit don't you? :-)

i used to have an iron cobra junior pedal and it was perfectly fine. i played tons of gigs with it and did recordings. it doesn't have all the fancy adjustments and hi end bearings, but it's smooth and it works. now i have a regular iron cobra double pedal and it's great, but probably out of your price range for a brand new one. i also have a mapex falcon single pedal and i can't say enough good things about that. a double version of that would be out of your range, but check out that mapex raptor pedal. i personally am not too keen on the feel of direct drive pedals, but like homelarus was pointing out, $270 is a steal!

There is a Tama Iron Cobra P900 Double Bass Pedal for $100 on craigslist. Is that the older model?

Yeah, I'm not sure about the model # either, but youre on the right track. There are tons of great deals on used pedals out there. I bought my Iron Cobras used and in newish condition for $200. They are going for even less now. Keep looking, you'll find something great.

Heres one example after 5 minutes on Craigslist...

Musician's Friend has $25 off if you spend $199 this weekend. Would it be a good idea to purchase a pedal & throne or should I still look around craigslist? I posted a pic of the tama iron cobra for sale. He said he would take $100

That's a great deal on an Iron Cobra double pedal. Those are good solid pedals.

Those look perfect!. That is the "older" model. Older as in like a couple months ago...lol.
They have just brought out a "new" model but its hardly any different. The one in your picture is the one that 95% of Iron Cobra owners have nowadays.
So no, its not really "old" at all.

I got mine (exactly the same as your pic) used for double that price. In fact, thats about 1/4 the original price!.

Jump on em if they are in great condition and working order!.

Man. I'm starting to think I got ripped off. :/

Cool, I'll give him a call today & see if he still has it. I could also purchase a Brand New Iron Cobra Jr for about $150. Would the used pedal be a better option?

If the used pedals are in working condition, then they're fine. If you can take someone more experienced with gear to help you assess their condition, I'd suggest you do.

I buy most of my cymbals and drums used. Why pay the full sticker price on an item that doesn't really deteriorate in quality over time?

Dunno. Would you rather have a new PDP or a DW in newish condition?.

Or, would you rather have a new Toyota or a newish Lexus?.

The IC JR might be a good pedal but the IC is Tama's flagship pedal.

Which one do you want?.

The Iron Cobra Jr. would be a good choice,in fact most if not all Tama pedals are great. Why not scan Ebay for some used older single pedals and pick one up for cheap, say 30-40 bucks and upgrade you cymbals with the cash you'll save.

If you think not having a double pedal leaves you with less than a full tool box, just listen to John Bonham,or currently Mike Johnston. That guy is amazing with a single pedal, and so was Bonham.Nice choice with those Rockstars. They sound great with good heads and properly tuned.

Here is a quick pic I snapped with my phone of the kit I purchased. I have a total of $500 into it. Had to purchase a throne, clutch for the hats, cymbal stand, sticks & the iron cobra db pedal.

The IC pedals are in great condition. The seller said that he just had them sitting there & needed some extra money. The heads need to be replaced. They are like new but don't sound that good. Thinking of going with some Remo Pinstripe Heads.

it looks like your floor tom might be upside down. it's a little hard to tell from the picture but usually the mounts for the legs are down low, not way up high like they look in the picture. i suppose it doesn't matter that much as long as the batter head is on top.

congrats on making some fine purchases, btw.

I could not disagree more! I think if we all had the chance again, we would buy a double kick pedal and build up equal strength on both feet...
